Follow these steps and your little lounge Lions will be contently soaking up the sun with its warmth, and studying all the wonderful outside things that cats love to watch in no time!
Materials Needed
These materials are for a 2-tiered model, which is great for senior or overweight cats.
- 3 Boards *measure for appropriate size.
- Wood Screws
- Carpet ‘automotive’ or any soft material you find the easiest to work with.
- Two 8ft 3/4" PVC pipes.
- Ten 90deg elbows
- Eight "T" fittings
- Drill
- Staple gun or other adhesive for carpet.
*You will need to make sure you choose a large enough board, width and length for your cat to fit on comfortably. Size up the cat when he or she is lounging. You may have some scrap boards lying around. If not, and get an appropriate size board from your local hardware store. Many of thee stores will cut wood or other materials to size for you right in the store.
Steps to Build Your Cat Window Perch
1. Cutting out the Boards
After figuring out the appropriate width and length for your cat(s), cut out the 3 boards the same width and length each.
2. Cutting the PVC Pipe
Your measurements will need to be based on the width and length of your boards and the height from the floor to just under your windowsill. Cut the piece of tube that is between the 90deg elbows to come up with the width of your board. Do the same for the "T" to 90deg elbow. Started at the top and work your way down. Once you have one side figured out, just copy the cuts for the other side. Note: Use 2 pieces of PVC to link the bottom of the frame together.
3. Putting the PVC Together
Connect
everything together,
4. Finished Frame
And now you have a simple frame.
5. Add your Boards
You can use wood screws to secure the boards into the frame. Drill your guide holes into the boards, and put the boards onto the frame. Drill tiny pilot holes into the PVC .Run the wood screws into it. The screws need to be long enough to go into the PVC but not come out the other side.
6. Apply the Carpet
First put a carpet shelf that runs between the two PVC cross braces
using short wood screws placed ever 2 inches. Take the boards back off and wrap
carpet around them. You can use a staple gun to secure it on the undersides of
the boards. Mount the boards back into to the frame.
And Viola! You’re Done. You may need to give it a couple of days for your cat to get used to the new cat perch. If you have a cat that takes to catnip, throw some on it for enticement!
