Cat Food - Is Your Cat Sick?

Is your cat SICK from the Pet Food Recall?
Comment from Susan Peters:
When a person or pet is ill the first thing to happen is a loss of appetite. The body shuts down the digestive system to use it's energy to fight what is attacking the body. If you are sick and throwing up you would probably be very upset if someone tried to force-feed you. Your pets are the same way. The pets know best if they are needing food or not. Unless your pet is severly under weight Do Not Force Feed these pets. Should you need to be force-feeding something be sure it is an electrolite type solution, not food! - Susan Peters

Pet Food Recall Class Action Law Suit
It has been reported by Menu foods that some of the Pets affected have developed kidney failure. Kidney failure is a serious condition for Pets and can either develop rapidly or over a long period of time. Pets that are in kidney failure can exhibit the following symptoms:
Increased water intake
Increased urination
Decreased appetite
Vomiting
Lethargy
Pets exhibiting any or all these signs should see a veterinarian immediately.
- retain food samples for analysis
- save all packaging and receipts, and document the product name, type of product, date codes and/or production lot numbers
- document the dates that the product was fed to your pet, how much was eaten, and the time when you first noticed symptoms

They should! Same stuff...just different amounts of it.

In december my dog became very ill, vomiting, no appetite, listless and on her death bed.
I rushed her to the vet, and he said she was suffering from kidney failure.
I bought a bunch of different branded foods, canned and pouch cuts as well as Iams and Science Diet, Purina, etc.
Now a week ago my cat starts exhibiting the same symptoms.
I tried phoning the company and emailing them. They took their phone off the hook and they shut down their email system.
What can we do? I spent $300. in vet bills so far!
Let me know if anyone has any leads? Thanks
So far, the only thing the company is offering to do is refund your money for any product still on your shelf. Of course, you have to take it back to the store you purchased it from. If I were a fortune teller .... some lawyer is going to get rich over a massive torte case. I'll let you know if I find any leads as far as a class action law suit goes.
Something else to realize ... the company is not going to STOP putting gluten in their products, they are going to use a supplier who has less tire tread, bug killers, and trash in their gluten. Same old stuff just sounds better.
My kitty has gone. We had to put him down becausr kidney failure. The vet did tests and his symtoms indicated the diagnosis. Heavy urination and considerable amount of increase of water intake; cat was dringing all the time and urinating all the time. Vet did bllod test and said the the cat's kidneys have failed. Can't anything. Cat was in distress; crying all the time and not eating; high weight loss... Cat was fed Purina Friskies cat food, cuts and gravy.
Most of the pet food makers are going to continue making the products just like they do today. We, the consumers, need to make sure not to buy food that is fit for a chicken or a turkey. Our pets don't need corn, wheat, and junk they eat meat!
I'm sorry about your kitty!
Susan Peters
I have had my cat to the vet to recieve IV's and a vit b12 injection. He is very lethargic and the vet said he was in kidney failure. How long will it take to get this crap out of his system?
Donna...
Sorry, most don't recover. Few do. I hope your kitty does well.

My cat ate Special Kitty cat food. We had to put her asleep two weeks ago due to kidney failure.
My cat died on thursday from eating SPECIAL KITTY Purchased at a WAL-MART in memphis. He was my baby and now he's gone and the vet said he had to be poisoned but we dont have anything in my house thats out of place. Someone needs to pay for this! I know im not the only one that lost a family member. Has anyone looked into a class action suit? If so email me
My cat was diagnosed with kidney failure. The
ONLY food he would eat is SPECIAL KITTY
from WAL-MART. He didn't die, but my vet
inserted a "giff" tube into his side so we can
give him fluids (dialysis) twice a day. He is
doing better but still doesn't eat much.
I called the hotline number but no one has
returned my calls. I want a LAWYER!
I had only fed my beautiful Oscar dried food all of his life (Nutro max lite for seniors for the past few years). He turned 11 years old a week and a half before we had to put him down. He wasn't eating, he was drinking and peeing a lot and he was extremely lethargic. He had also lost several pounds over a 4 week period but he never complained about anything because I really don't think he wanted to leave. us. This does lead me to believe however that perhaps it is not just the wet food that should be recalled. I think that we should look into some kind of compensation for our tragic losses. We miss him terribly.... Ottawa, Ontario Canada
Hi just want to know it Speical Kitty Treats have been re called as well
My darling cat Spooky developed Kidney Failure a week ago, he is still at the vets on special fluids trying to help his Kidneys out, however he is going to need these for the rest of his life - he is only 4! He too has been eating Special Kitty. If anyone hears about any sort of legal action please let me know, I am frantic to get some answers at this point.
About 2 weeks ago, we bought new cat food from Target- Friskies cuts and gravy cans. We went though a total of 3 cans (we generally give him 1/2 can a day). Last week, he suddendly became very ill... We brought him to the emergency vet, and they were not sure what was wrong with him. As time progressed, he got sicker... he was vomiting and very lethargic. Within 4 days, he passed away. My husband and I feel he may have been poisioned, and just came accross this recall today.
Does anyone know if Friskies canned food is included in this recall?
My mothers cat was also put to sleep, due to kidney failer. She also only ate Special Kitty from Walmart. Is the company responsible doing anything? Who do we contact to complain and let them know that there are more pets then just 10, (as reported in the news) that have died because of thier food?
Special Kitty is on the recall list. I wouldn't suggest using it.
Further information I just found -
The FDA is asking those with sick or dead pets to call FDA state complaint coordinators. A list of contacts for such coordinators is available at http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.h
My cat became very ill on Feb. 24th, vomiting. no appetite, just laying around, didn't want contact with anyone. I had no idea I was poisoning her with her Special Kitty wet pouch food. I offered her everything I could imagine to try and get her to eat, finally she ate a little broth from tuna fish. My vet gave her antibotics but she still isn't eating as she should. I lost a day of work, a vet bill and the cost of medicine from all this screw up. All they want to offer you is the cost of your unused food. That is crap- I'm consulting an attorney.....
My cat's sick right now, (she also eats Special Kitty), she just started to drink a lot (last couple of days) is is very lethargic, my wife thought she was going through a growth spell...
I saved her from the road when she was 3 weeks old 2 years ago..
my wife's taking her to the vet at this time...
By the way the symptoms the affected animals are experiencing are the exact symptoms of anti-freeze poisoning. Anti-freeze is extremely appetizing to animals. The manufacturer “Menu Foods” has been suspiciously quiet about what exactly is the problem… They may have been using ethylene glycol or propylene glycol (less but still toxic) as an appetizer (e.g. secret ingredient).
My cat died from eating special kitty, too. Thank you, Lucy, for post #20. Finally there is a central resource to file reports to. Menufoods info claims only 10 deaths, but looking over the internet, there must be thousands!
hi all sorry to hear about your losses. i posted this on another part of the site but wanted to let you know i to have a 6 month old cat that last month developed kidney failure. i took him to the vet and he asked me what i was feeding my precious jasper i told him special kitty. he told me to change his food immediately to dry science diet or make his food for him. i looked recipes up on line and that night started force feeding him with baby spoon. next day vet called said he had never seen test readings like jaspers on a 5 month old kitten. he said there wasn't much we could do and that treatment was goin to be very expensive. vet said he gave jasper 72 hours to live to a week. he asked us if we wanted to bring him down to his office to start treatment or wait til tuesday when office reopened.asked how often pets were checked over holiday weekend they said couple times a day. i din't want jasper to suffer alone so decided to keep him at home with people he knew.well i am happy to say jasper is laying beside me right now watching me type on the computer desk. he is gaining weight, eating and starting to play again. he goes back to the vet on april 3rd to see how much damage was done to his kidneys. jasper only get home cooked meals and we bought him a pet water purifier fountain that keeps him water clean and cold through filters. my vet last month to thought it was anti-freeze poisoning but have none in the house and jasper has never been outside. i would like to know if there will be a claas action lawsuit because i would join also. not right if they don't help with vet bills. i have a call into fda also waiting for return call
My 7 year old cat ate Special kitty his entire life. The 23rd of Feb,we took him to the vets office and he died within 2 days. They recalled the food 1 month after his death. A little too late...don't you think?
Again I would like to thank Lucy for the hyperlink to the FDA. I called them (in Seattle) and left a message. They returned my call 30 minutes later, and asked for my contact information, and asked about my cat's symptons. She said she's getting 10 reports an hour of pet deaths. And that's just to the one complaint coordinator that I talked to. She was extremely nice and sympathetic. She also said to hang on to my unopened packages of Special Kitty, and to also call the Menufoods hotline and report to them. I'm going to forward the FDA hyperlink to my local television news channel.
My cat Bella has not been herself for about 2 weeks now.She is only 1 year old and has survived liver failure 5 months ago. She spent a week in the hospital on I.V and medication. She had a full recovery. She began displaying similar symptoms about 2 weeks ago. She is lethargic, anorexic and drinking alot of water. We thought we knew what to do from the last time ie: feeding her moist food with a syringe. Then I heard about the huge recall on cat food however I don't see the food she's been eating on the recall list. We feed her whiskas dry food and when she refused to eat that we started force feeding her Fancy Feast. Has anyone heard anything about these products or had problems with their pet injesting these foods. She is an indoor cat so has definitely not gotten into anything hazardous outside and we have a toddler grandson so our house is baby and pet proof. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has experinced problems with either of the foods. My condolenses to all who have lost their beloved pets.
I had a cat named Teddy Bear. I had to have him put to sleep about three weeks ago. He was 28lbs in November and lost a lot of weight in about 4 weeks time the food I was feeding him was Iams canned cat food some times 9 lives. I took him to the vet they told me it could be a number of thing's. They tested him for worms, thighwored they checked him for AIDS and lukemia all came out ok. I didn't have the money for the kidney or liver test I bearly had the money for the other test he had done. So we took a different road they gave me some cat food called AD cat food. It was to help him gaine wight. I was having to force feed him at first, but then he started doin' better so I took him off of the AD and like an idot put him back on the Imas. Was not long after that he got sick again two weeks later had to have him put to sleep that was about three week ago today. I have had a few cats in my life but none like my Teddy Bear... He would light up when I walked in a room. I would pick him up and would wrap his paws around my neck and squezz tight has if he were giving me a big hug then would rub his head on my face I love him sooo much and I know he loved me. It took everything I had to make the phone call about having him put down. The vet told me that it would be what's best for Teddy. I am calling the vet tomorrow I now have a lot more question. Something needs to be done. These animals are more then just our pets they are our family. I hope that all the animals that are sick get better soon and all the people that loat their pets this this my heart gose out to you God Bless.
Dawn
My cat of 16 years passed away on Friday. She followed me around when I was pregnant. I found her when she was just a few days old. She has been an outdoor cat for many years. She was feed Special Kitty because she did not have many teeth left and she did enjoy this brand. She went so quickly one day she was fine and the next she could hardly lift her head. I cannot blame the distributors of the food because they did not know. However now that they do know it should be announced and posted everywhere. I used to buy the food pouches a month's supply at a time. If I had known just a week ago I would have checked. It was not until after death that I realized I should check the web to see if anything else unusual was happening. Thank you for this web site. I only found the information through you. Now I will dilligently watch my three other cats that have been fed dry food regretfully (special Kitty). Hopefully they will be fine. Could someone tell me where they found the recipies to make their own cat food?
Thanks
We had our cat put to sleep on 2-21 on the advise of our Vet, we were told that she had Acute Kidney Failure. On 2-16 when we took her to the vet she had became largthic and not eating. They did tell us her glucose level was up and that she had diabetes but that she would be ok once her level's were right. Because she was not eating they wanted to keep her but after a couple of insulin shots (within 2 days) her level's were normal but she never improved and the vet was not sure why but took a blood test that showed AKF.
We had to have our cat put to sleep also.GOURMET CAT FOOD my foot. Isnt this why the king had food tasters?
cont*** computer error** anyway we have since been trying to find out why this happened as never felt right about it since she seemed to go down so fast. Now after hearing about the recall I am thinking it could of been her food though the food she ate is not on the list. We changed her food to Iams in Dec but it was the dry food and about a week before she got sick changed it to the Science for weight control (dry). Plus she ate about a half a can a Fancy Feast some days. Makes me wonder if the dry food was not also affected. Just is a awfull big coincidence as she had all the systems the recall describes.
Our boy Spooky came home tonight and after 9 days on Fluids (and a $1400 vet bill) he is looking good. My greatest fear is that without the fluids he will slide back downhill. I have been praying unlike ever before and hopeful that he might be one of the lucky ones - I will keep everyone elses kittens and cats in my thoughts and prayers - this is just the worst thing to have happened to our beloved pets.
My beutiful cat, Geronimo. Has recently started showing signs of these symtoms. I have fed him Specisl Kitty for about 9 months. We took him to the Vet last week, they gave him some antibiotics. and sent him home. We are concerned for his well being.
My cat pest , a four year old indoor cat, was put down Friday afternoon, he loved his wet special kitty duck and rice in gravey especially. I am such an idiot. I have actually recomended this product to friends. He too died of kidney failure and his health rapidly declined Got sick ( noticably) march 1, died with kidney failure including lathargy, couldn't stand or walk, had gone blind ( four year old cat), coma like sleep.Died March 16. Menu foods must pay. thepetlawyer.com is Molly Maguire Gaussa, Esq. she is compiling a e mail list of complaints ( putting it mildly), so please people, don't just let this one go, call lawyers, demand that your cat or dogs death have some purpose. Get these bottom line bottom feeders where they live,. PUT THEM OUT OF BUSINESS.And stop feeding your pets petfood. boiled hamburger and rice is good.
I had to put my kitty down on March 2nd due to Kidney Failure. Buddy was only seven years old. I had no choice but to have him uthanized because his prognosis was not good. He was fine then in January he all of a sudden began losing weight, so I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with AKF. I gave him canned food as a treat. I feel horrible, as well as everyone else that has had to deal with their pets dying or getting sick due to the food. My heart goes out to all of you and your pets.
I had to put down my cat Maggie on March 5. She had never been sick in 13 years. It all happened very suddenly, in less than a week. I didn't know what it was due to, until I read the symptoms of kidney failure this morning, and then I realized that was exactly what she had. The only change in her diet was eating "Whiskas Temptations seafood Medley" treats. I normally got her other treats but these were at my local grocery and so I picked them up for her. It was within a day or two of starting to eat them that she became unusually thirsty and went downhill from there. These are not on the recall list - yet - but please don't feed them to your cat. I miss Maggie very much.
Has anyone had problems with the Goodlife Recipe? My cat ate it and became very ill. I checked the website for goodlife and they said that they are not part of the tainted pet foods..anyone heard of anything?
The Goodlife Recipe SUCKS! No, it's not on the recall...but, check out what it is made of
Last Wednesday, while shopping at Wal-Mart, I picked up a few pouches of "Special Kitty" Duck & Rice as a treat for my cats. After eating a single pouch, two of the cats refused to touch the stuff again. One went so far as to yowl at me until I took it away the second time I attempted to feed it to her. Unfortunately, my four year old, Tyson, ate all three of the pouches I offered him (one Wed. PM, one Thurs. AM, and another Thurs PM.). By Thursday PM, he had started vomiting. The vomiting continued Friday, despite the fact that he was hardly eating. I rushed him to the vet first thing Saturday AM, where he was diagnosed with renal failure. Following days of IV therapy and SQ fluids, he's back to himself.. but as of Monday AM, his kidney values had continued to rise. They are rechecking his labs tomorrow, but Tyson's future is uncertain at this point. (Bloodwork for the other two was normal.)
Additionally.. at the time, I thought Nick and Alex were just being picky. In the future, when one or more of my cats is that adamantly opposed to something I'm offering them, I'll take the hint and pitch it just to be on the safe side.
I'm prying for you, Tyson!
My little cat that we had for years, had to be"put down" by our vet 2 weeks ago. At the time I did not think it was anything to do with her food. But with all these people telling me their sad stories about their poor animals dying of food poisonings, I began to wonder. But now I KNOW. The cat that was "put down", was on Meow Mix. We have a new cat now (He's 2 years old) and he was on Meow Mix for about a week, but we took him off of it Fast. Can't help thinking it was the dry food (meow mix) that was the culpert. Meow Mix is not going to be used with this NEW CAT.Can you tell me why this tradgedy happened to my little cat?
I can't tell you why ... other than we trust the brands we buy. Sad, isn't it?
I have three cats and am terrifyed of feeding them at this point. I felt it was safe to feed them the dry Nutro but now that I see some messages where people are having problems with dry foods and fods not on the list I am worried. The nutro definitely has the gluten. Right now I am going to stick to Fancy Feast seafood cans since they do not have this product in the ingredients. I could not bear anything happening to my three babies. I feel awful for everyone going through this terrible thing with their pets.
I don't see Fancy Feast or Purina Cat Chow on the recall list and Wishy ate this almost exclusively. He fell ill 2/23 (fine that morning), started vomiting, urinating, diarrhea. Spent the weekend in the animal clinic (dehydrated), given fluids by IV, then we lost him on 2/27. The clinic kept asking if he could have gotten into any poison. I don't see Fancy Feast on the recall list, but yet I can't help thinking that must have been the culprit. We're out over $1500, but I would gladly pay that again if he would have lived (he was 9 years old).

My cat became ill very quick.
she had to have 1 kidney removed. She also went blind. only 6 years old. They eat dry food could this be related to the recall???
Here is a little further information. I had emailed an attorney by the name of Molly Maguire Gaussa (the pet lawyer) I received a response back as follows:
I am compiling information and preparing for a possible legal action. I can add you to the email list if you wish to receive updates. I will have an answer by the beginning of the week as to whether or not we are going forward with the Complaint.
If you want to have your name added to the list you can email her at 'mgaussa@thepetlawyer.com'
My cat died about a month ago. She was only 5 years old and perfectly healthy until we switched to Iam multiple cat formula. I noticed shortly after we switched that the grocery store discontinued that formula. I thought that was odd so I searched on the internet to see if something was wrong with it that I was not aware of. However, at the time nothing came up. I am curious to see how many pet owners that fed their cats dry food experienced the same symptoms. My cat stopped eating, was very lathargic and vomiting. To make matters worse, once she started getting sick I bought MORE wet food to force feed her. I think that only made matters worse. I am furious and want answers. Oddly my friend's cat died just a month before mine of the EXACT SAME THING.
CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT
I just spoke with another attorney - Jay Edelson out of Chicago who said they are looking at bringing a class action law suit due to the pet food recall. If you would like to sign up they will email you over some forms including a questionnaire to complete - their contact number is 888.325.4652
Our cat ate special kitty dry cat food and died due to kidney failure in december. Coincidence? I don't think so.
First I want to express condolences to everyone who has lost a pet from a menu foods product. Second I want to thank everyone on this site for possibly helping to save my cat (still waiting to see is she recovers).
2 days ago I came to this site looking for answers, I found lots of testimonials about sick and dying pets. I called my wife and told her it’s worse than we thought and to take the cat to the Vet. immediately. He was suspect because of the symptoms (listless, drinking and peeing a lot) so he pulled blood work. The blood work showed some kidney damage (by the enzymes the kidneys were spilling into the blood). He said that typically these enzymes don’t show up until about 75% kidney failure has occurred, so he anticipated Felix (my cat) had suffered at least that much damage. He also said that there are 2 types of kidney damage chronic (happens over many years and isn’t reversible) and acute (from a toxic insult) there has been some success in reversing some of the damage of the acute type if it is treated soon enough). If you think you dog or cat is not behaving normally take it to your vet and have a blood panel run! If your vet doesn’t take you seriously enough take you pet to another vet! This poising epidemic is much more wide spread than the news has been letting on, thousands of animals may die from this before they know why.Stop feeding the pet food immediately!Freeze the open pouches or cans and hold onto the unopened food! (don’t throw away the evidence).Veterinarians and the FDA are collecting samples of food their affected patients were eating. Last word of advice, don’t be angry at Wal-Mart, Eukanuba, Iams etc. none of them whished or wanted something like this to happen. Menu Foods is another story, we can be angry with them!here a link into Menufoods web site that will get you past the recall page

I lost my cat of 16 years yesterday, my family is is in mourning over this and now I find out that the food I was giving him was contaminated makes me feel irate that such a horrible thing can happen. My cat was the world to me and my family and whoever is responsible for this has to pay for what they did. I thought my cat died because he was old , but his body shut down and within 2 days he was dead.I console with everones stories of losing their pets, my cat cant be replaced and I will persue the person or persons responsible. I have 10 cats, but only feed one the special kitty pouches.Again my deepest sorrows for all the good people out their for your losses.
hello I have a 2 and a half year old cat eating science diet dry food. Two days ago he was playing having fun doing cat things. Then he started vomiting became lethargic and quit eating. I took him to the Vet yesterday and he is diagonsed with kidney failure. Yes I think the dry food is contaminated also. He is on medicine and vitamins but is still not eating. I love my cat and he is ONLY 2.5 yrs old and suddenly he has kidney failure????
If anyone finds any information on dry foods please contact me at lindaas544@msn.com I am going to research all that I can on this matter.
I called Hills asking them if in any way the dry food could be contaminated. Their repeated response was it isn't on the recall list. So I call to report a cat suddenly becoming ill eating their food and they are not even concerned , but ony say it isn't on the recall list. Nice company super expensive food, try to give your pets the best and they become ill , it makes no sense.
Christmas night my family and I put out wet food for our 5 cats as a christmas treat, we do it every year because usually they only eat dry food, when we did the only one that didnt come to eat was our 11yr old cat, Jasmine, so I went to look for her and found her but she was very ill and when i put her up to her plate she didnt eat and that was very unusual for her, and all she was doing was peeing, drinking and sleeping, so the next day the 26th my sister brought her to our vet and she was there for a couple of hours and our vet did a blood sample and she was off the charts and then she was diagnosed with kidney failure and we had to put her to sleep that night. My question is, is that I know it was about 2 or 3 months ago but we have used the Special Kitty, both wet and dry, brand before, depending on which of the different brands had more food and was less exspensive since we do have 5 cats, do you think it was because of the food recall?
This is sick. I'm sorry but my two cats are the world... as im sure everyone else here can agree. Luckily, my cats are ok. The one cat refuses to eat the Special Kitty food....the other LOVES it...and she is only 9 months old. I have called the company and they have taken a report...but unless they are sick, there is nothing to be done...which i understand. How can companies get away with this? Cats are like children...
My heart goes out to all of you who have lost a cat due to this. SOMETHING needs to be done.. more than a recall.
Hi Sidni (comment 60)-- The pet food recalled was for "cuts and gravy" style produced between Dec. 3, 2006, and March 6, 2007, at a plant in Emporia, Kan so I think it is possible that you might have had contaminated food. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Our cat Kiara is 9 years old. She has never been sick...... She ate Special Kitty pouches from Walmart. We compared our remaining packs to the recall list and they match. We will keep them for evidence. It breaks my heart to know we have been poisioning her with food and did not know it. I noticed about 3 weeks ago the same symptoms: drinking alot and crying for water, not eating the wet food, she would lick the gravy. She was also urinating alot. She did continue to eat the dry Purina cat food. We learn about the recall Monday, I stopped feeding her the posion. I a have started giving her canned tuna, like you and I would eat. Went to the VET today 3/21/07. They took blood and they will call me tomorrow. I feel I know what they are going to say. I am so angry, I want those responsible for hurting her to pay dearly. She is part of our family and we all love her very much..... I hope and pray she will be okay. Please email me if you know of any class action law suits, because I AM MAD AS HELL. lucyh1@comcast.net To all that lost your pet because of MENU FOODS, I am so, so, so, sorry. This has been a nightmare...............
Our cat has all the symtoms and its whole diet is entirely special kitty. I would like to have the CEO of the pet food company eat what is left in the two remaining bags of his special cat food( That I will hang onto) or pay us one billion Dollars....if he can eat the rest of his special kitty food and not get sick( from the same food that made our healthy cat deathly sick), I would consider lowering my suit to be fifty thousand per animal affected class action, not just the old recall crap. Cat or dog, they are family. If the CEO can hide behind his lawyers...let a court empty his pockets. They need to pay more than a refund or paper trail that leaves us all empty in heart and wallet.
I had to have my 20 year old cat Wheezer put to sleep on Feb. 23. He ate Friskies all of his life and was very healthy. But over the last year, the vet said that, because of his age, his kidneys were going and so we should feed him KD prescription food. Then one day last month, he suddenly started having trouble walking and using his back legs. He couldn't even get his back legs up over the litter box to urinate. And he was extremely lethargic. Granted, he was a very old cat, but if anyone knows if KD prescription food was affected, I'd like to know. It would be very ironic and heartbreaking if the food I was giving him to help his kidneys actually killed him.
This afternoon, our 7 year old cat Peanut who had lost considerable weight and refused to eat for the last 3-4 weeks died at the vet's office after having a massive seizure. This beloved cat ate Special Kitty Select and refused to eat it about a month ago. We thought that she had a bad tooth and she was on antibiotics for this. She still wouldn't eat and I investigated the list of recalled cat food finding that I not only had the brand, but also the affected pouches, which I have also kept for evidence against this horrible company. The vet found that there was kidney failure and had her on IV therapy. We have lost our best friend due to a company trying to save money. We also want to join a class action suit to show this company that you cannot kill a dear friend and get away scott free. We are very sorry for all other pet (friend) owners/lovers that have also had this loss.
If regular dry food isn't any good, then come on now, what are we to do anyway? What kind of dry food is good to feed our cats and kittens? I feel I deserve an answer from somewhere. Is there anywhere in Maryland that I could contact to see if the dry food I've been giving my cat is either good or bad? I took him off Meow Mix, but have him on 9 lives Tender Cuts. I would like to know if this dry food is good. All the comments that I've readtell me that we have been doibg Nothing wrong, yet our cats abd kittens are dying from kidney falure.I am a mad owner of our cat"Ted". Ted can't undrestand all the comments I've read, so he doesn't understand whats up. Answers, answers, amswers, thats what I want. Every cat that I have personally owned have become like little babies to me.
I had heard earlier this week of a food recall but I had no idea it was as big as this. I am now worried as to what is safe to feed my cat. I noticed a week ago I gave my cat some whiskas wet food and my roomate told me that she became ill and vomited in his room. I am wondering did I just feed my cat poisioned food? Is her dry food poisoned to? I noticed yesterday that she drank a large amount of water. Can anyone help me?

I have two cats who eat frieskies chicken pate and pretty much all the pates but last week my hubby bought a bunch of cans of chicken in gravy and after they eat it they get diarrea and sleep alot. COuld this be ffrom it?
My god, this is insane. I have no idea what to feed my cat. She was eating fancy feast and purina one dry food. she vomited and she never does. so i don't know about this food, even thou its not on the list, it seems other people were having problems with it. sorry to all the people who have lost their cats, just devasting..... I would totally sue!!!!! please do sue, don't let them get away with murder.
PEOPLE WAKE UP !! We must contact the MEDIA !!! to set them straight on the real devistation that has befallen us. The news is saying that only 16!! pets have died. WE must get the truth out there on how many of our loved ones have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.....THERE IS A COVERUP..... the media is trying not to tell the real truth because of political correctness...THE TRUTH IS that the wheat was purchased from CHINA where rat poison is regularly used to deterr their rodent problem.China has its own high rate of mortality due to food poisoning in one form or another... just google that fact. If China uses these chemicals on food product, what do they think the wheat that they sell {to stupid westerners} would be used for? Perhaps it was produced for NON HUMAN consumption and sold as such to the manufacturer of "pet food" [for we stupid westerners] hold their pets in high esteme...you see, CHINA has no regard for DOGs or CATs.Do you know what China does to DOGs? China breeds dogs then skin them alive, drop them in boiling water to keep their flesh tender, because it is a delicacy. You know about the fur coats recently sold in US and determined to be dog fur (from the above mentioned practice) . A few years ago, it was cat fur that made it into our market , in the form or stuffed toys. WE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.... NOT ONLY regarding the wheat... but the fact that our government is pushing us to use companies that do not have regulations.WHY DO WE HAVE TO GO OUT OF THIS COUNTRY for low cost WHEAT???? when the gov't is subsidizing our farmers, not to grow wheat. AND .. we sell our wheat to other countries at reduced rates.WHY are there no controls or inspections of food products that come into our country!! WE are loosing our loved ones. IT IS NOT fully MENU FOODs fault. They perhaps may also be victums.......PEOPLE WAKE UP !! .... DONT BUY FISH from CHINA... DONT BUY FARM RAISED fish from anywhere...
CHECK your labels !!!
I usually give my cat Fancy Feast, which is fine. But a week or so ago, I gave her Special Kitty that my mom got from WalMart. Now she is drinking tons of water and she is peeing a lot. She is also very lazy and she vomitted.
I am taking her to the vet tomorrow. Someone needs to do something about this. WalMart can't just sit there and say "oops, I'm sorry" .. We need something done here! I love my cat and she's a big part of my family now..
I am cuirous about how cat food can be manufactured put in a pouch and be contaminated but that put in a can isn't??? my special kitties get "special kitty" can food twice a week are they sure the cans aren't contaminated? I'll feed them friskies for while anyway.
I have always fed my cat Purina Friskies (sliced) and Prurina dry food and within the week, he has stopped eating and become lethargic. he is at the vet now. They have already tested him for leukemia and FIV, both negative. They are running more tests, and hopefully they will come up with an answer. He is only 3 years old. Friskies is not on the recall list, but I have read alot of postings from other people stating their pets are getting sick and they only feed them Friskies.
Hopefully I will hear back from the vet soon as to what is possibly going on.
Jamie- My cat died from eating canned friskies.
One of my cats started vomiting and became lethargic about 3 weeks ago. After taking him to the vet the first time they didn't find anything wrong and he seemed ok after a few days. Then I noticed he was losing weight and the vomitting started again. I took him to the vet again and they kept asking me what has he been eating. I told them only purina friskies chefs blend DRY FOOD, which wasn't and still isn't on the recall list. I am almost certain it has to be the food. He has the exact same symptoms as other pets getting sick: Lethargic, won't eat or drink ,became dehydrated and was vomitting alot. The vet put him on IV fluids and antibiotics for 2 days. I left the vet for a second time not knowing what was wrong with him. I'm giving him antibiotics and medicine to stop the vomitting at home. I also have to give him food and water with a syringe because he will not eat or drink.
My kitty went from strong beautiful, healthy cat..........in just few short weeks ...to pitifully underweight ,sick dehydrated ..... and is now at vets office struggling for his life! Someone needs to take responsibility for such an awful thing like this to happen. The only food he liked was special kitty chicken with gravy from walmart.
Even if foods are not in the recall, many companies still use Menufood for their processing.
I would not trust any canned food precessed in any of their plants until they get to the bottom of it.
Call the companies and ask them point blank if their foods are processes at Menufood. It is not a hard question, and they should be able to answer it.
DRY FOOD DEATHS/ILLNESSES NOW BEING RELEASED:
I AM ONE OF THE REPORTED STATISTICS IN THIS TALLY!http://www.itchmo.com/read/voluntary-dry-food-repo ...Voluntary Dry Food Reports SEE THEIR LIST OF BRANDS AFFECTED, PER VOL. REPORTS

I pray for everyone who lost there pet,I wish some one could pay for this lost.I pray for all of you and any other pet you might have, that not lost. Lillian Gray of Plant City Fl Gallagher rd 33565
glad we use costco brand sorry for your losses sue emtill they are broke
I only feed our 2 cats Purina Friskies canned sliced wet food and Purina dry food as well. One of our cats suddenly began vomiting on and off for the last 2-3 weeks. I have continually checked on line and watched the news, but Purina is not listed as one of the tainted foods. I don't get it. Is it tainted or not? By the way, we did stop feeding them the wet food in the last few days because we are scared. This whole thing is crazy and scary!
I used costco brand food (dog and cat) and have 1 very dead beloved pet along with another hanging on to life after full vet care of all possible care and no regards to money.

Your unthoughtful and heartless responses are left unsaid at best!
In keeping with the heart of kindness I will hope your pets do not suffer, but as for you I do hope you come to realize what suffering is and if........
YOU HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY , SAY NOTHING AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RE: To those who are hurting from this, I am sorry to hear your pain and loss. My love, pain, and heart goes out to you!!!!!!!!!
ok... they were saying there are only a few cases of illness/deaths from the tainted cat and dog food. I skimmed through this entire forum and I've seen around 15 cases of special kitty illness/deaths. I was only counting the special kitty cases because that is what my cat eats. At first there was just pouch foods on the list, now some can food has been added? They are saying that all the dry food is good, yet I have come across a few forum entires from people claiming their cat(s) are having the same symtoms, yet only eat dry foods from MENU foods. I think ALL pet food made in those facilities should be taken off the shelves. They seem very unsure about what foods are tainted and what dates they are recalling... personally I dont trust them. I think I'll look for something made by a different company, going to be hard tho considering almost every brand from IAMS to Our Comlipents is made in that same factory... I guess the cheap stuff is just as good (or bad) as the more expensive stuff. I feel so bad for all the people who ahve lost and animal.. i dont know what I would do if I lost mine, espeacially over something so stupid as this.. not that hard to check a can or two out of ever couple thousand to make sure you arn't selling "Special Kitty - Guaranteed the loss of a Kidney in Every Can!"
Does anyone know if this has ONLY been going on since Dec 06, or has it been going on longer and nothing has been said about it? Our family lost our beloved Kali back in September, and when I was reading the comments, I realized her symptoms were the same as the cats that had died. We thought it was just her age, but it makes me wonder........
my cat became ill, vomiting about 10 times and very lethargic. He seems to be better now, but still weak. WE feed him Iams dry food. We were on vacation in Florida and one of my 2 dogs had the same symptoms that lasted about 6 hours, the dogs eat Science Diet dry food. The cat gets Whisker lickens for a treat, and the dogs get Beggin strips
my cat smokey just died today after not being right for a couple of weeks. He had eaten meowmix dry cat food his whole life until about two weeks ago. i then had him into the vet for testing because he was exhibiting alot of these same symptoms. the vet said he just had a urinary tract infection and at that time had me switch his food to purina one for indoor cats with urinary tract problems. well, i gave him his antibiotics for the 10 days the vet said and then, the last day and a half i have been telling my husband that he just doesnt seem right. I took my 12 year old shopping today and got a phone call from my husband that smokey had passed away sometime this smorning. the poor cat went to use his litter box and never came out. i had had this cat for approximately 7 years and had syringe fed him to keep him alive as a kitten. his mother left him when his eyes were still closed. I almost feel like i have lost one of my kids. this just doesnt seem right. someone should have to compensate for this.
My kitty, Buffy, got really sick just a couple of days before the news announced the pet food recall. She wouldn't eat, she was very lethargic, and would only get up off of my bed once a day to drink as much water as she could and attempt to use the box. The poor thing was so weak she couldn't climb over the lip of the box and would just pee on the mat in front of it. We noticed a change in her eating habits shortly after buying a bag of Special Kitty moist kibbles to mix up with her 9lives dry kibble, just because she really loves the stuff. At first, she was just eating a little less. We had just recently put our two cats on seperate diets and figured that she was just getting used to not having to compete for food. But it kept decreasing till she didn't even finish a quarter of a cup of food in 48hrs. Suspecting it might be the food, we threw it out because she seemed to not like the Special Kitty at all anymore and was just eating the 9lives, which was really bizarre for her. Fortunately, when we took her to the vet, she didn't report anything seriously wrong with Buffy's bloodwork, slightly elevated liver enzymes which is common when cats who eat regularly don't eat much for an extended period of time. The vet gave us antibiotics to give her for a week cause she suspected an infection and no Buffy seems to be doing fine.
We can't help but wonder if its due to the food. Her eating habits started changing within a week of giving her the Special Kitty. This is a cat who really loves food and for her to feel so lousy that she can't even bring herself to eat anything (NOT EVEN MILK!!) is really bizarre.
My cat all of Dec was getting sick eventually stopped eating lost a lot of weight. Took him to the vet and after about $1,000 worth of tests and hopitalization and 3 months woth of pills he is now doing better. he ate the special kitty wet food from wal-mart.
i take it the special kitty blue bag which is the 1.97 bag is that bad for my cats that is what i feed them ever since they were able to eat and now i got one that just had a litter of kittens 2 weeks ago is it safe for them some one let me know
my husband and i cant have children of our own surgery got the best of me but we do have 3 dogs toby,,kc,,and samantha and 3 cats shady,,cinnamon,,and cookie since this recalled begain i have been worried 1st the can food then the hard food now its the treats ,,,,,,,i was reading all the letters on this web and i am too feeding my cats friskys and 9 lives and fancy feast and meow mix and chefs blend but my cats are not sick,,,,[thank god] but i did learn something from all the letters i was reading its called spending time cooking thats right,,,,in order to stop the killing of our 4 legged children we must start now.. stop buying pet food and start cooking for them then we will save the life of our beloved pets and they will thank us for it while they are happy and healthy ..........my 3 dogs and 3 cats are my children and i am not reddy to bury them in the pet cemetery they are young and i enjoy haveing them around....number
No problems with Friskies gravy items but 2 cans into a new case of Fancy Feast gravy elegant medley my cat became very ill foaming at mouth projectile vomiting very skiddish and distance, within 24 hours my other cat had less server siymptoms but similiar lot of lip licking notwanting eat gagging. Stop the food both seem to be doing better youngest cat had bloodwork and scope w/ biopsy all came back normal baffled vet, convinced it was food vet feels the same and now they both need bloodwork done again in 2 weeks to makes sure no perminent damage was done to their kidneys. Last July both became ill youngest bloody stool and liquid feces and crystals in urine other violent yellow foam vomiting, they were eating IAMs wt control and hairball form mixed and fancy feast fish with ASPIC and tuna with gravy( the oldest could keep down the savory salmon FF which does not have gravy) if you notice ASPIC disappeared off shelves vet told me the older one had developed sensitive stomach and the young one just needed SC C/D. Could not give any really answers of symptoms now I know it was the foods they were eating. YIKES. WIll let you know how their blood work comes back . Please stay clear of anything even if not on list that has wheat gluten that FF is still not recalled and my have ruined my cats kidneys forever all because they say it is safe. Using Merrick wet food oly ones with no gravy, even theough it does not list wheat gluten have heard organic doesn't have to list stuff used in small quanities, trying to find a dry not associated with Menu foods, Diamond or Purina, the only thing I can come up with is Felidae...anyone have any comments on its saftey.
I brought my 3 year old "Lux" to the vet March 19th after RAPID weight loss (and I mean RAPID...half her weight, at least. And this was no fat cat to begin with!) I noticed she was peeing more frequently and that the urine clumps in the litter seemd rather "sticky". She was drinking more often, eating less and less (to the point where I tried giving her cans of tuna...and she just licked the broth off!) and just lay around lifeless in one spot all day. I became extremely worried about the white color of her nose and gums.
She was severely anemic and spent 4 days at the vets getting a blood transfusion, I.V., and every blood/bodily fluid test you can imagine. We are talking about a well fed, indoor cat who had routine check-ups and "highest quality" (Science Diet Indoor cat and Hairball control dry) food all her life. The vets were baffled, and still continue to be. It was not diabetes, not feline leukemia, not kidneys...according to them. They think it was a "stomach infection". Whatever it was, thankfully, she clung to life and now she sits here purring away on my lap while I deal wih the 900$ vet bill. She will most likely be on cortisone pills for the rest of her life. I have a burning suspicion that this is cat food related. I can't help but think it was the wet cat food I was feeding her (..on occasions, as "treats") in February and March. I gave her JE Mondou brand, Purina Pro Plan, Science Diet, and Friskies. Funny enough, when I was buying these cans to give as treats along with her dry food, I thought I was doing the right thing by avoiding Iams, Special Kitty, or any of that "cheap" cat food. I learnt the hard way that they are ALL THE SAME GARBAGE. Watch your pets, check for those white gums....I'm sure this has everything to do with those Science Diet products.

my cats eat special kitty soft food in the can and hasnt gonna sick yet but yet it does ack like his normal playful self he is only 8 months olds
my cat has been throwing up. i have ben feeding her special kitty for a year. lust here reasently she has been getty sick. iam so pissed. something neds to be done.
I am so angry with the Chinese for this as I know that some months ago they deceided that anyone living in China was allowed only one cat or dog. They went into expat compounds and put any animals they found in excess of this number in a vat of acid. Lovely - isnt it? Maybe they deceided that the rest of the world should comply to this as well .....?
Please just don't feed your kitties ANY commercial cat food....just because it's not on the list doesn't mean it's safe....we haven't even come close to the "tip of the iceburg"....

I was just at home visiting my family for spring break. When I got there, my sister's cat, Zoey, who is 3, was happy, healthy, and having fun playing and being loved. She and the 16-year-old cat Fluffy, have been fed a combination of dry Iams food and also wet pouches of Meow Mix food. Apparently some of the wet food did not have wheat gluten in it, but another kind did (also Meow Mix, in the variety box). Lo and behold, only a day after being fed this Meow Mix with wheat gluten in it, Zoey began vomiting. This went on for two days; on the third day she was not playful, was slow-moving, and just looked sick and pitiful. My mom took her to the vet that day (Wed.), and the vet said she probably had a virus and gave her some shots/medicine. This perked Zoey up but still she was not herself. She went in to the vet's again on Fri. and they did blood work. Today (Sat.), the vet told my mom to take her back out right away because Zoey was experiences Renal Failure! Zoey now has to be on fluids 2-3 times a week for the rest of her life, at only 3 years old. Even though Meow Mix is not on the list, I don't believe it for a second. I think these companies are full of it and we have barely seen the extent of the contaminated food list. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you who have a lost a beloved pet or have one who is sick...
I have 2 cats and a dog. My cats are almost 2 years old and my dog is almost 1 year old. My cats have always eaten Special Kitty dry food and my dog has always eaten Ol Roy dry food. Both of my cats have been having kidney problems since Christmas of this past year.....until this recent outbreak of recalling pet foods, I had no idea that this crappy food is probably what is causing it. Now I'm afraid that my dog might be in danger also. I love my animals so much.....they are like me and my husband's children. I don't know what to do! I think we are going to start feeding them what we eat, considering we don't know what is in the other food!!! Also....I'm so sorry for those of you who have lost an animal through all of this.....my father in law just had 2 dogs die because of eating Ol Roy dry dog food....this is horrible!
Yes, it is.
we lost 2 cats, both of them ate friskies tender cuts in gravy and all other brands of the friskies. i have 3 other cats who eat meow mix hairball controll havent had any sympthoms yet from it. yes i know friskies isnt on the list but, both cats died within a week of each other . 2 weeks before the recall, at first i thought they had just gotten sick , but now im thinking it was the friskies. one cat slobbered terribly and cryed out terrible she had lost a lot of weight . she got to where she would not eat friskies , so i bought tuna and baby food for her. she did a little better for a day or two and then i gave her more of the friskies and a day later she died. it is so hard to watch something die that means a lot to you. she was a good cat , i want to share a few things she would do, in the mornings when id wake up . i would sit on the couch with my elbow rested on the couch arm with my hand over part of my face , she would take her paw and try to remove my hand for me to go and feed her. she also liked going through the mail that was stuck between the vcr and cable box. i would sing in an off key and she would squawl out too, she was a special part of my days, it is very hard to be without her..i hope they get to the bottom of this ,we are all terrifed to even buy any pet food , please if you are feeding friskies to your cats , at the first sign of sickness stop feeding it to them . cause we dont know whats going to show up on the list next, who knows maybe its all the foods , they just arent saying anything, just dont trust any of them
I've read repeatedly that Friskies are making cats ill....if this is the case, why haven't they been on the recall list? Something needs to be done about this!
Jeannie,
The good news is something is being done. There is a class action suit being filed against all the pet food makers demanding the makers use "truth in advertising". Rather than telling the public their products are good for a pet the class action is going to force the companies to report what is really in their pet foods and let the public know that animals don't "thrive" on their products.

Just wanted to express my thanks for all the work you do. I'm at a total loss as to what to feed my 2 kitties...they will not eat Merrick,Felidae, Spots or Innova...I did find something called figaro that they will eat but don't feel comfortable with a constant diet of tuna....I've tried homemade to no avail...chicken hearts,liver,etc...even roasted a turkey! Thinking Friskies was a "good" food, that's what I always fed them...they are 2yr.old neutered indoor brother cats...does anyone have any suggestions at all? Thank you much.
Jeannie,
Your kitties aren't going to eat near as much of a quality food. I would say they will eat only a 1/4 or less of what there were eating. The quality food is very rich and "sticks to their bones". Maybe you are taking this as not caring for the food.

Patsy,
The Class Actions are pushing along but take a while to get "classed" and do all the court related stuff to get the ball rolling.
So far, things have been pretty quiet about a recalls, I haven't added anything to the list since the beginning of June.
Pets are still dying and becoming sick. We are seeing new cases everyday. The pet foods may be avoiding any recalls but haven't changed how they are made so pets are still sick and dying.
Susan
a friend of mine lost her cat on july 15 2007 she described all the sympthoms of kidney failure.. she was feeding them friskies food . i told her i would stop that brand cause thats what both of my cats was eating and they both became ill and died with in a week of each other .
Please help us figure out what is wrong, since early this year both our dog and cat have been mysteriously ill both have been check by three vets and nobody knows what is wrong im wanting to see if anybody else have experience this neither pet ate food off the recall list. both have had spells for days that they couldnt move not eating or drinking after a few days of not being able to eat or drink enough, from diarrah and vomiting, foaming brown urine, no toxins in or around house, snoopy the dog died in june and rocky the cat is going through another episode of this unexplained. Snoopy only had slighlty abnormal kidney results, and rocky has slight diabites. Neither is enough for this extreme sudden sickness that has been off and on for six months. Both were perfectly healthy before the beginning of this year. Everything has been checked even the house for carbon monoxide to lead poisoning. Could this be the food? Is anybody else experiencing this? Help
jeff, if your pets are on medication for any thing this slows the poisioning from the food ...so i was told.... the two cats i lost .they ate friskies food which was also not on the list. my other cat has asthma and he is on asthma medication and he ate the same food as the other cats ... he got to where he wouldnt eat much of the food , and when the other two died i took him off of it. so just because its not on the list doesnt mean its safe to feed it to them.. i hope things work out ... im sorry you lost your dog .
Jeff,
Thousands of people have reported what you are reporting. Just because a pet food was not included in the recall doesn't mean the pet food is safe. The pet food companies were not forced to join the recall but could choose to join or not. Sounds like what you were feeding was made by a company that decided not to join the recall and hope for the best. Shame on these companies for hiding behind the garbage they are selling for us to feed to our loved ones!

I made a commentary on another of your hubs I think and can't find it now. Jake's lost nearly all his body fat and though he does amble about he's sleeping more than normal and still lethargic even after switching foods. Nathan who only ate Jake's food after his bowl was empty is going through the same urination, vomitting, diahrea etc symptoms that everyone's been reporting as renal type failure in their pets. I am more than pissed, but in no position financially or physically to get the pets to a vet.
I fear the worst for Jake and Nathan, but luckily I had the kitten on her own diet.
Which of the Del Monte (9 Lives/Meow Mix) dry cat foods are really safe? One bag shows packaged in US and that's the Meow Mix, the other that caused the sickness as far as I can tell is packaged or made in canada which I'm sure imports more stuff from China too for the food and might have even laxer laws for making the food.
The company called me back to assure me that both foods (using UPC and brand name) were safe and couldn't be the cause for my cat's problems. I pointed out the Vitamin D3 problem that they'd reported themselves and asked if any of these foods could have been made at that facility and contaminated indirectly or directly.
She just said the company line again and said take your animal to a vet again and had no other helpful suggestions and when I asked to speak to her boss/supervisor she hung up on me.
Called back only to find my number was blocked from accessing that number. They've not answered any of the ten emails I sent them on the contact us link and their website's built in help/contact us built in email comes up as broken.
Seems they are trying to ignore the problem and make us believe they have nothing to do with it. Del Monte's a powerful company, but if I lose Jake or Nathan or even both, I'm going to do my best to make them pay.
It won't fill the loss I'm sure to feel or the vacuum in my life this might cause. But maybe this might hit them in their wallets.
We need to get the FCC onto this and see how many CEO's and Board Members of these companies suddenly dumped large amounts of their stock in their own companies before this became public news. If so, the Martha Stewart precedent applies. You'd think?
Please email me if you can (and send me my other post's link so I can follow that thread too if you can find it. Would mention Jake, Nathan and the kitten Pip). I know you have tons of pet owners asking for help and I praise you for that.
I wish I had more hope for my pets, but I can't sleep and hold them dearly. I've tried a bit of plain yogurt to reline their intestinal tracts in case it's a poison (the activated charcoal I gave them with the last of my saved money's in case it was poison seems to have had no effect other than make them vomit soon after.)
They are licking sugar and some tuna juice off my finger if I hold it under their nose long enough. Nathan is still fat and I hope he didn't get enough of the supposed bad food that's not on the recall list to be permanently affected, but Jake looks like he's lost five pounds in the last five to six days since this occurred.
I am at wits end here. Help of any sort, even prayers are appreciated for my furry friends that saw me through so much and endured two nasty hurricanes when I lived in Virginia.
Dick Evans (Richard)
Richard,
I am not sure of which of my articles you have posted in the past. The answer to your question is this...The two brands you mentioned are listed in the Class Action against 9Lives and Meow Mix do to the thousands of pet deaths and illnesses associated with these two brands. No, the makers of these two brands didn't wish to be included in the recall. The pet food recalls were not forced.
My heart pours out to you and your loved ones,
Susan
today is oct 30 07 my kitty chunks is very ill i knew that the re-call had hapened earlier this year but had no idea these foods were still bab i've never fed the special kitty ,but i have fed whiskas,9 lives, science diet, and kit and kaboodle after the fourth vet visit he is still very sick and i'm afraid he's going to die. why are these products still on shelvs if they are toxic?
Naska--Looks like its just me here--I am looking for info on 9livesTuna--saw what u posted--Dont expect any Big Signs in your stores--even the Pet ones. Even in the bigger stores--no one says a word--& no one has any ans. to --WHY IS PURINA & THE OTHERS STILL PUTTING CORN &/or wheat glutin their pet food? Its like this--We no understand u--We no speak English. All I know is those of us that cannot afford Premium Foods are out of luck. Not that mid-range foods are cheap. It really has me angry that the big pet food companies cant even dignify us w/a source for the corn glutin and other ingredients. How about at least NOT FROM CHINA--even thru the back door. So I hope your kitty recovers & then. if u can, buy the best stuff u can afford that is safe listed on this site. Read the labels & only buy the ones that have no corn/wheat glutin. Some companies will have some w/& then some without. Take a magnifying glass. Of course there are other things in the food that may or is bad--so check the safe food list. We are all sad about these animal losses--past-present-and probably long ago losses when we didnt know why a critter died before his/her time. The Pet Food Industry may think we will forget--Ha!! not animal people--there is not as much chatter on this site or visits but it will never really be forgotten. People have turned their attention to gas prices & toxic toys--all important--yet animal people will not put this on the back burner. My2cents------ Good Luck w/Chunks
River,
I couldn't have said it better, myself.
Thank you,
Susan
My cat has fallen sick and urinating all over the house, I noticed that there is blood in his urine also.. Today he is vomiting. the only thing I have done differently is fed him Priority dry and wet catfood. I am wondering if he has kidney failure due to the catfood recall??? I just lost my job and cannot afford to take him to the vet, can you sugest anything that I can do???
Thank You
Cheryl,
You MUST make sure there is no Corn, Wheat, or Soy in your cat's diet. These three grains are toxic to our dogs and cats. I don't know what you have been feeding him for treats, etc. Check the labels if there is corn, wheat or soy in anything he eats it could kill him. The pet food companies are lying to us by telling us their products are a healthy choice for our pets even though they include these three grains and other ingredients not fix for human consumption.
Please keep me advised.
My prayers are with you.
Susan
Feb 2008- yup, 2008
Special Kitty Dry catfood- hairball control formula, both the original orange and the new yellow degigned bags, caused symptoms of kidney failure on both of my cats- poisoning. When I replaced this food a few weeks back it cured their bloody diareha and vomiting. Then I went back to a new bag of SKDC and the poisoning symptoms reapeared. It was not my wellwater, which is what I had considered- it must be the cat food.
Shannon,
Check your cats' diet for corn, wheat, or soy. These three grains are toxic to cats and dogs. Feeding corn is like feeding antifreeze.

my cat had thrown up off and on for a couple of months now..He would eat and then literally throw it up.. i usually fed him 9 lives but when money was tight i would by special kitty dry food instead...he would have urinary accidents in the floor and sometimes diaherra he did appear to be drinking more water but he was not lethargic. I woke up at 6 am yesterday Friday and he was swollen couldnt move or really make a sound. I immediately took him to the vet who said it was a bladder infection common in cats gave him two shots and said watch for the swelling to go down and bring he back tomorrow...Well we didnt have that chance BuddyCat died a couple of hours later and he was only 7 and he was my baby!!!!
Penny,
I'm so sorry.
The pet food recalls have ended but the illnesses and deaths associated with pet food has not.

I stopped buying Special Kitty brand a couple of years ago after the outbreak. I buy my cat food at Wal-Mart, and because the usual brand I now buy was not on the shelves, I decided to try the Special Kitty again. And my cat got SICK again, like he did before. What are the ingredients in the food, and where are they from?
I had a very healthy cat...my darling boy who had all of his shots and who was very healthy. He got very listless right before Thanksgiving. He died four days later.
The vet blood work said he had renal failure. It as off the charts and he could not be saved. My cat had all of his shots and he appeared very healthy...not chubby, but good size and bright eyed. The picture of health until one day he was not eating or drinking just wanting to curl in a corner acting sick. We went to the vet immediately ( day before Thanksgiving ) and then again day after Thanksgiving early morning to a different vet.
I had fed him Special Kitty cat food, blue bag Original. I had no idea about any of this recall until last week when I was in Walmart and overheard the clerks commenting about it being off of the shelf. I asked why and t hey told me.
They told me I need not worry as this was back in October / November. I said my cat died November 29 and they said I had better call the Special Kitty hotline. I did call and the Special Kitty lady told me that it was only the green bag and if I fed him the blue bag for me not to worry.
I wish now I would have asked why did they take it all of the shelf instead of just the green bag that was making the cats sick.
I guess I still want to know WHY did my cat die when he was so healthy ? I live in Pennsylvania.

You would think the people who are putting the Special Kitty food out in stores would try to atleast watch their backs. They could very well have a big lawsuit on their hands. I mean I have been feeding my cat Special Kitty food and this is a PURE bred Persian and he is on his death bed. It just breaks my heart to see something this tiny suffer. Sure most people without a HEART or any true feelings for animals might say OH just get you another one. NO these Kittens/Cats are like children. What if it were you? Better yet what if it you were the owner of the animal with the problem and you were out the bill. I'll bet the owner or producer would change it then!!
I just wanted to mention that I had a 3 year old cat named Oona who died of AKF/ARF back in July of 2005. The vet did several blood tests and couldn't understand how my cat could still be alive - all tests were off scale high. Vet said it looked like antifreeze poisoning. Indoor cat only, nothing but natural chemicals in the house (I've allergies)... but Special Kitty and Fancy Feast brands from WalMart.
After a weekend of forced IV fluids, Oona never made it. Luckily, I've two other older cats who did survive and are now on special diets.
Last month we brought home a healty 7 week old kitten. We feed him Purina Kitten Chow and after 3 days, he wouldn't eat or drink. He died the next day. A month later we adopted a 9 week old kitten from a different source. We happened to feed her the same kitten food. After 4 days, she stopped eating and drinking. We had her to the vet 3 days now to keep her hydrated. Here condition isn't getting any better. We believe its the food. Has anyone had the same experience this year, 2009, with Purina Kitten Chow?

My cat got sick eating only Special Kitty dry food, she never ate wet or pouch food. Why have they not said a word about the dry food? Exact same problem.
