Categories of Gems and Jewelery

Gems and Jewelery is a vast subject. There are many branches in this industry. One has to know the different categories and sub-categories of Gems and Jewelery industry to know the subject better. No serious efforts are made to classify Gems and Jewelry till date to the best of my knowledge. Hence, this is an attempt to classify Gems and Jewelery industry. Some of these categories are defined here with short descriptions.

Initially we categorize the industry in two parts.

1. Gemstones

2. Jewelry (Jewelry is also spelled as Jewelery in UK and some other countries and as Jewellery in India).

Gemstones: This may be classified as 1. Diamond and 2. Colored Stones.

Diamond: It may be categorized as 1. Solitaires and 2. Small sized Diamonds or Setting Diamonds

Colored Stones may be categorized as:

1. Precious gem stones:

Ruby, Pink-Blue-Yellow-Green-White Sapphires,

Emerald,

2. Semi-Precious gem stones:

Both precious and semi Precious stones are found in cut, cabochons, beads, drops, carvings, figures etc.

Hi Jyoti,

Superb information. Excellent hub. This will go up in search engines.

I rate this as one of the best of your hubs. Classifying things are really difficult and you have attempted and accomplished the tough job.

It is useful for common men as well as experts.
