Catfish

What is a Catfish

Catfish are a very diverse group of bony fish.

Name

The Catfish are named for their prominent barbels. These barbels resemble a cat's whiskers.

Order

These fish belong to the order Siluriformes.

Diversity in Catfish

They can vary in size from 2 inch to 13 ft. Catfish range in size and behavior from the heaviest, the Mekong giant catfish from Southeast Asia and the longest, the wels catfish of Eurasia, to detritivores (species that eat dead material on the bottom), and even to a tiny parasitic species commonly called the candiru, Vandellia cirrhosa. There are armour-plated types and also naked types, neither having scales. There is a species of catfish called electric catfish.

Diet of Catfish

The Catfish are omnivores. Most species will eat almost anything.

Interesting Facts

Over 447 million pounds of catfish was produced in 1995.

June 25 is designated National Catfish Day in the United States.

One catfish can lay up to 4,000 eggs a year per pound of body weight.

The quantity of food will depend on the species or kinds of catfish as they vary a lot in size and mass and thus the amount of food. As I mentioned above, the size of a catfish can vary from 2 inches to 13 feet.

I love catfish...Especially fried. I used to catch Bullhead in Upstate New York along the Saranac, which also produces Salmon for only two or three weeks during the late summer.

Cajun style catfish had a nice taste to them or baked, seems like salmon is more in style these days.

One year the wind blew down my young children's plastic wading pool in Winter/early Spring. I just left it there because of where it was in the yard and because it was cold out. I don't know how long it took, but when I went to do something about it once the weather warmed up there were catfish swimming in it. :) I'm glad they weren't 13-inch catfish!
