While not all-inclusive, this is a simple guide to some of the more popular breeds of cat. Before purchasing or adopting any pet, you should always keep in mind that this is a long term commitment of both time and money, not to be taken lightly.

Abyssinian cats

If what you want is a lap cat, this is not your best choice. Abyssinians are known to be active and playful into their golden years. One of the more loving and devoted cat breeds, they are typically good with children and other pets.

They range in color from beige to ruddy brown, ticked with dark brown and black markings. Abys are medium in size, and somewhat muscular, which lends to thier love of high places. It is not uncommon to find them perched atop a refrigerator or entertainment center.

Primary health concerns for Abyssinians include gingivitis, and kidney disease.

Persians

This is a beautiful, but high maintenance animal. You should not consider this breed if you do not have time to devote, each day, to combing or brushing their beautiful flowing coat. Otherwise the result will be tangles and mats, which are both unattractive and painful for the cat. A weekly bath is also advised, to keep their coat clean and healthy. They have large eyes which tend to promote tearing which can discolor the fur. You can stay ahead of this staining by occasionally washing their face.

As to their attributes, this is a loving, quiet cat. They enjoy their play time, but they also love to lounge. You may find them sunning in a window or doorway, or relaxing on a comfy sofa. Their voice is quiet and more pleasant than most other breeds. The Persian's face is decidedly pug-like, as is its broad body. They are bred in colors and color combinations too numerous to to list here, but a little research should turn up a wealth of information.

Persians adapt well to any indoor environment, but are most at home in a relaxed, quiet atmosphere. They are an almost endless source of joy and love. They are equally at home with adults or children. Persian cats are currently the most popular breed of house cat.

This beautiful cat is not known to be more prone to disease or injury than any other breed, although it should be kept a strictly indoor cat. This will keep tangles at bay, as well as communicable diseases and parasites.

Himalayans

Not a specific breed, Himalayan cats are considered by most breeders and organizations to be a color catagory of Persians. They possess the same physical attributes, and require the same maintenance as Persians. I have included it here because many people are unaware that the two are basically the same breed.

The Siamese

Originally from Siam (called Thailand, today), the Siamese is a very popular breed. It has a sleek body, white to off white in color. Various markings on their face, ears, tail and feet delineate the varieties of this this cat. These are called points. A chocolate point, for instance, has a white body with chocolate colored markings on the above mentioned areas. Other varieties include: Seal Point- most widely known, Blue Point, and Lavender Point. All purebred Siamese cats have haunting, crystal blue eyes.

This cat is VERY social. They do not like to be left alone. If you work, or are otherwise away a lot, you might consider buying two that are close in age. They enjoy entertaining each other.

They are also quite vocal, and will demand your attention! Their voice can be shrill at times, and has often been compared to a crying baby. They are also loving, entertaining, and active. If you own a Siamese, you will never lack for companionship or entertainment. These cats do well with children, and their intelligence and gentle disposition make them ideal companions for seniors.

Health concerns: You may occasionally come across a Siamese with crossed eyes, or a kinked tail. These do not affect the cat's quality of life in any way. Aside from that, this cat is not prone to any disease or defect more than any other breed.

The Maine Coon Cat

The Maine Coon is one of the oldest known breeds native to North America. Also known as the American Longhair, it has been the subject of many myths and legends. One of the more interesting legends surrounding the Maine Coon is the idea that it came into existence as the result of mating between six different cats. The cats in question were sent to Maine by Marie Antoinette, as she was preparing to flee France. In all likelihood this is only a myth.

The Maine Coon comes in a myriad of colors. Some solid, but most have tabby markings. The first known were brown Tabbies that looked remarkably like raccoons, hence the name.

This is an affectionate cat, but does not usually demand your attention. They may follow you around the house, as they are curious, and people oriented. Mine gets stepped on quite a bit, as she has a tendency to follow me into a room, and lie down directly behind my feet. They are also known to wait outside a closed door for you to return. If I am not quick enough to return, mine will actually knock on the door. If the door is not latched, she will actually push it open with her head!

They are not generally known as lap cats, although this varies with the personality of the individual cat. More often, they are content to be in the same room, or possibly on the sofa or chair near you. They are generally gentle in disposition, and independant. Although, they will definitely let you know when they require something from you.

The Sphynx

Named for a masterpiece of the ancient world, this is a relatively new breed. Dating back only to the mid 1970's, this cat is absolutely beautiful to some, and utterly repellent to others. As far as opinions go, there doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

Often referred to as hairless, this is actually a misnomer. Sphynx cats have extremely short, fine fur. They are not nearly as unpleasant to pet as their appearance would suggest. The fur is downlike to the touch. Another common misconception is that this is a hypo-allergenic breed. This is not true, as the main allergen associated with cats (and dogs for that matter) is dander. Dander is ever present on the skin. You cannot eliminate this allergen in any animal, but peroidically bathing your pet can reduce it greatly.

Sphynx cats are extremely active, playful cats. They are known to be intelligent, affectionate, and good with children and other pets. One caviat: This is not an independant cat. You should not consider this cat if you do not have time to devote to it.

The Sphynx has very few health concerns, and a lifespan comparable to most other breeds, typically 9-15 years.

Cats as pets

As I have said, this is not a cat compendium. But, if you are considering a cat as a pet, these are a good place to start looking. Cats, in general, are relatively low maintenance, affectionate pets. It is often said that you can not own a cat, as it is more likely that it will own you. Having been owned by several cats, I have found them to be a constant source of joy. If you have earned their love and respect (they don't give it freely), you will have a constant, loyal companion that will stay by your sidefor many years. This is a time and financial commitment as cats have a long life expectancy. 9-15 years is typical, but a well cared for cat can live into its 20's!

Good luck in your search, and I do hope that this information is of some help. If you are interested in a cat that I have not covered here, just leave a question in the comment area, and I will gladly answer it. As always, thanks for stopping by!

i like your tips and style!! I hope people will read and educate them selves that you should not get a dog, cat or even a car just by its looks, it should be about the performance, personality and each individual traits and needs of these animals as you explained..Its all about compatibility,,,, compatibility for humans helps too!;)

Compu-smart, you are absolutely correct. Our local humane society is filled with animals that people have dropped off because they bought them without realizing the commitment involved. I even heard of a lady who left her apricot poodle there, because she had bought new furniture and the dog's color no longer matched the theme of the room! As a result of all of the stories we have heard, we became serial animal adopters. Our home is often referred to as the make a wish foundation for animals!

Graceful and Angela, I definitely share your love of cats, and indeed all animals. Ours tend to be a bit less physically attractive, though, as we tend to take in animals that are lame, abused, or otherwise disabled. As far as pets go, I think you would be hard pressed to find a more graceful, regal animal than a cat. Thanks to all for the comments.

I still like the himalayan kitties the best. I had one a few years ago he was a dark brown with lighter ears and the bluest of blue eyes. My teens named him Khalua.

great hub regards Zsuzsy
