Cause of Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, may affect different parts of the body. In most cases, hyperhidrosis occurs on a person's palms, but this can just as easily

become evident on the person's face or underarms. While certainly not life-threatening, hyperhidrosis can be a great bother and prevent the affected individual from resuming a normal lifestyle.

Understanding Sweating

It is easier to understand the basics of excessive sweating by being aware first of the process of sweating. Perspiration occurs when the body's sweat glands release a salty liquid called sweat. It is an important natural bodily function used to maintain the body's temperature. The amount of perspiration your body lets out depends on how many sweat glands you have. People have about two to four million sweat glands and which become active when they hit puberty. Women have more sweat glands than men, but sweat glands of men are more active.

People sweat in response to heat. People also perspire when they're exercising and doing something physically strenuous.

People sweat when they feel scared, embarrassed, angry, or nervous. Other natural causes of sweating are consumption of caffeine, spicy foods, and alcohol, cancer, infection, menopause, fever, and low blood sugar. A body suffering from withdrawal symptoms or one that has recently taken certain medications may also consequently experience sweating.

In instances like this and when sweating appears to occur at a normal rate, a person should afterwards wash his face and body, change his clothes and bed sheets, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and move to a slightly cooler area.

What Causes Excessive Sweating?

Medical professionals are yet unable to pinpoint exactly what causes and triggers excessive sweating, but they do believe that it's mostly like a genetic factor behind it. They have succeeded however in identifying a clear link between excessive sweating and over-activity in thoracic sympathetic ganglion chain, which is part of the sympathetic nervous system. The thoracic sympathetic ganglion chain is located inside the chest cavity. It is responsible for controlling a person's sweat glands, also known as eccrine and apocrine glands.

In some cases, excessive sweating occurs as a consequence of menopause, hyperthyroidism, and other diseases.

The Two Types of Excessive Sweating

Primary hyperhidrosis commonly has a localized effect and unknown etiology. It usually affects the person's hands and feet, face, and underarms. Treating primary hyperhidrosis generally requires a combination of treatments and medications.

Secondary hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, is generally caused by an underlying condition and affects the entire body. Such conditions include but are not limited to obesity, autoimmune disorders, malignancy, and diabetes. Curing secondary hyperhidrosis requires treatment of the prevailing condition.

Identifying the Cause of Excessive Sweating Based on Affected Areas

Certain mental, sensory, and emotional responses processed by the cortex or brain may cause a person to suffer from excessive sweating.

The hypothalamic area, for instance, and which controls hunger and thirst together with temperature, may trigger excessive sweating due to thermoregulation, exercise, and systemic diseases. Medullary area, on the other hand, and which controls involuntary functions of the body, may trigger excessive sweating if it experiences chiari malformations or infarction. Excessive sweating also occurs if the spinal cord is affected by mass lesions like tumors or diseases like syringomyelia. The endocrine system also has the power of inducing excessive sweating if it is suffering from excessive thyroid activity or if the pituitary gland is going overdrive.
