If one looks at the numbers, Cebu city is the largest tourist destination in the Philippines. Located on Cebu Island, it is also the largest port in the country. The idyllic tropical settings on the island make it a favorite of tourists. The growing city is home to its own attractions and culture. It is the fastest growing city in the Philippines in terms of economy and development. Cebu has an international airport and there are frequent flights to and from Manila and other major cities in the Philippines. Because it is a major destination in and of itself, most tourists fly directly to Cebu rather than connecting in another Philippine city.

As with everywhere in the Philippines, jeepneys are the cheapest and most available form of transit. Some tourists take these vehicles (which are something akin to modified pack-up trucks or minibuses) simply because of their bright decorations and colorful names. Taxis are reasonably priced and convenient. SM City Cebu is the largest mall in town, though prices are probably cheaper at older malls like Robinson’s and Mango Square Mall.

Eating in Cebu can be an intense experience in and of itself. Being the Philippines’ top tourist destination as well as a city of commerce, international cuisine is widely available. Street food is dirt cheap (though usually not dirty) and delicious. Tropical fruit is a mainstay in the region but the prices will seem ridiculously cheap to travelers from non-tropical climes.

Provincial Capital
Provincial Capital

Basilica Minore del Santo Niño is an impressively constructed church in the city. The Provincial Capital building is also a good example of quality design and architecture. There are numerous skyscrapers, which give the downtown area a modern feel. After all, Cebu is a rapidly growing city, and new developments are commonplace. In fact, the city is growing so fast that local officials are having trouble keeping up with the pace. Businesses are worried that traffic congestion and lack of suitable infrastructure will cause a backlash in development. Still, the development continues.

Hotels are under construction all around the city. There is no shortage of 4 or 5 star accommodations, and also numerous budget guesthouses providing clean and decent accommodations for under $20.

Outside the city, the coastline is home to numerous beaches and resorts. Islands like Mactan Island are good for swimming and diving. Moalboal offers similarly impressive dive sites. Water sports are available, in the form of wind surfing, SCUBA diving and Jet skiing.

Cebu is an exciting city, and perhaps the most attractive in the Philippines.

Informative article.

I visited Cebu many times in the 90s(when Ramos was the president) for work and leisure. I prefer Cebu to any other place in the Philippines. I wonder if it is still the same.

A great hub. I love Cebu. Have travelled there many times & always have a great time. I love that it has so much history & even has the original cross that Magellan give when he introduce Chistianity to the Philippines. Colon St in Cebu city is the oldest paved Rd in the Philippines, & a very interesting {if at times a little dangerous} to walk in the evening.
