American Tradition: Serve Cider during the Holidays
Did you know that the colonial American's drink of choice was cider?
Cider remained the drink of choice until the middle of the 19th century when the United States experienced an influx of German immigrants. The German immigrants brought better yeasts and beer-making methods with them--leaving cider behind in the dust. As the Germans spread westward, they brought lagers to the country. Cider became but a memory.
What is cider?
Cider apples are similar to wine grapes because they contain a lot of tannin. They retain their flavor until after fermentation. Cider, or hard cider, is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented apple juice.
I've had cider, it isn't that special...
Have you had real cider, or the sugary stuff from apple concentrate? Real cider, that made from real apples, is delicious. I heard one person refer to it as "fall in a bottle." It is a great accompaniment to any meal, particularly cheese. Cheese and apples? Who would have thought?

I love cider, drinking it during holidays is special.
Cider was my Gramms speciality! Whenever I think of her I'm almost sure I can smell the pleasant aromas of apple and cinnamon in the air. It is still my favorite drink, hard or tame variety.
There is nothing better than coming in from the cold and having a "Cup-A" cider. Today I've been inside most of the day, also it really isn't that cold out there yet, (it is November after all) but it has to be really cold somewhere, right? That will be my excuse for the one or two 'non-tame' ones I'll indulge in...Cheers

Cider is alcoholic?? My aunts family owns a big cider making company, and I always thought it was just apple juice, kind of.. hmmm.. I'll have to investigate this one!
Isabella, cider is traditionally alcoholic. These days, however, we often refer to cider as a spiced apple juice.

Cider is Great!!!! I love it, its more popular over here in england than in america i think but looks like it might become popular again over there and its a great thing that you can actually make yourself and it be better than shop bought.
