A Celebration of Noodles

Let's Celebrate Noodles.

It would be impossible for me to count how many birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and other important dates have whizzed by me unnoticed. Many I regret, most I do not...probably because they whizzed by unnoticed.

There is one holiday (holimonth, rather) that I do feel grieved for missing however. Being in the legal profession with a practice the primary focus of which is criminal and family law, I am keenly aware that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. I think we are all aware that February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate diversity and the lives of African-American civil rights pioneers.

But, wedged right between this celebration of our past and awareness of our future, is a month whose designation passes annually without fanfare, pomp or circumstance. Well, enough!

March is National Noodle Month, and it's about time we let everyone know about it.

According to the National Pasta Association, 77% of Americans eat pasta at least once per week. 77% is also the percentage of:

With numbers like these, National Noodle Month can be a month-long spring break bonanza in no time. Let's party!

But What Can I Do?

I'm glad you asked. We all take on causes bigger than ourselves from time to time because it is the right thing to do. This is no different. Here are just a few ways you can get involved:

1. Lobby the lobbyists. The National Pasta Association is the trade association for the American pasta industry. You may not have your local Representative's or Senator's cell phone number, but the NPA does. Let the NPA know that we want National Noodle Month to get the respect and attention is deserves.

2. Get Noodle Knowledge. Can you tell linguine from fettuccine? You need to know your noodles. There are egg noodles, rice noodles, flat noodles, round noodles, any noodle you can imagine. Know your noodles, and teach others as well.

3. Celebrate the Noodle. Did you know that December 11 is National Noodle Ring Day? If you didn't, shame on you. Now you do. If you did, I'm a little worried about you. But, if we can down a pint on Saint Patty's day, surely we can do whatever it is you do to noodle rings on Noodle Ring Day.

You can also try some long-life noodles during the Chinese New Year, join the world in celebrating World Pasta Day, or have a little noodle pudding on Rosh Hashanah. America is the world's melting pot. Let's use it to cook up some noodles.

Noodle Parlance.

You can promote noodle awarness by employing noodle-speak. You don't have to always talk about noodles, you can just talk using oodles and oodles of noodles.

1. Slicker than a wet noodle: You've got to be pretty slick to qualify.

2. Use your noodle: Think people.

3. Noodle junction: A traffic nightmare (crazy interstate or highway interchanges).

4. Noodle on: To continue thinking about a problem.

5. To Noodle or Noodling: To ponder or search for.

Use Your Noodle.

You would be amazed at how others honor the noodle. Noodle around a little bit and see what you find. For example:

  • Naruto Clash of Ninja Revolution World Ramen Noodle Eating Championship: To launch the release of the new Wii video game Naruto Class of Ninja Revolution, Tomy sponsored the first Ramen Noodle Eating Championship sanctioned by the IFOCE (International Federation of Competitive Eaters). The winner, Eater X, consumed 10.5 lbs of Ramen Noodles in 10 minutes to claim the $5,000.00 prize.
  • Chuncheon Makguksu Noodle Festival: The Koreans dedicate an entire festival to the buckwheat noodle. So prevalent and identifiable has Makguksu (the Korean cold noodle dish) become with Chuncheon, the capital of the Gangwan province of South Korea, that the city hosts an annual festival dedicated to this noodle dish. A "buckwheat noodle street" has also developed in downtown Chuncheon featuring dozens of makguksu restaurants.
  • Noodle Slurping Competition: Doc Chey's Asian Kitchen holds an annual noodle slurping competition. The grand prize, a $100.00 gift card...to Doc Chey's I'm sure. To enter: complete this registration form. You can also take a quiz on the restaurant's website to determine if you are indeed a noodle head.
  • Taipei Beef Noodle Festival: An annual celebration of the Taiwanese staple, the first of which held a Beef Noodle Culture Gournet Summit resulting in the publication of Complete Guide for Beef Noodle. Perhaps the publication committee should have included a better English translator, but nonetheless, the noodle is honored.
  • Noodle, Texas: Population 40 (or so they claim), and steady at 40, or fewer, since 1956. Imagine: such respect for the noodle that you establish and name a community in honor of it.

Noodle On.

I have attempted to raise your awareness of the neglected noodle. I hope you will do the same for someone else. Together, we can make a difference.

Next March, let's make National Noodle Month what it was meant to be: a true celebration of the noodle.

It's funny you mention that ripplemaker, there are teacher aids for National Noodle Ring Day and National Noodle Month, I'll track those down again and post them in the hub. It's quite amazing.

Peter,

What an awesome tribute to a "long" time friend, the noodle. After all what would soup really be without them? Macaroni and cheese, would simply be cheese! Gooness gracious, think about it... Top Ramen would have never made it to the top! I would try and promote the idea to establish a National Noodle Holiday in March, but my efforts in March would already be committed to International Hamburger and Pickle awareness, which has also been given the month of March for their time of celebration. Alas, too many good causes and so little time. Great Hub!

Let's have a Noodles and Hamburgers/Pickles showdown, tough call on who to cheer for. Thanks, Doghouse.

It was a challenge, but a fun one, amy jane. Enjoy "words". I offer it up as a sacrifice, a topic I would have enjoyed.

My elementary school teachers used to say "20 lashes with a wet noodle!" for a wrong answer in class.

This is a very very very noodly-good Hub, Peter.

Thanks, Patty. I'll ask my wife if 20 lashes is still an appropriate punishment for elementary school kids.

Thanks, DJ Funktual. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Steph, I beg to differ. Yes, one could take the easy way out on "words", but there are so many directions you can go. The hard part will be deciding on one. Am I feeling a capstone hub series coming on...?

Patty Inglish, MS profile image

Patty Inglish, MS  says:

How about "Loaded Words" or "Empty Words" or "Forgotten Words" with songs and poems to go along with the text? lalalala

Peter M. Lopez profile image

Peter M. Lopez  says:

"Words" is endless. The origin of words, the evolution of words, extinct words, words of knowledge and words of wisdom, making up words. Have you read How To Snool a Snivelard, Snollygoster or Snoutband. If this topic can be entrusted to anyone (other than me, of course) she can handle it...I think.

Hi Peter,

I could smell the noodles in your hub. I love noodles and more so now after reading your hub. Noodles are always associated with longevity in the Philippines. There's no birthday without this queen of delicacies.

Now I am really convinced that a good writer can write well on any subject. Imagine, there's a noodle month and all those other information on noodles! I didn't know that. All I know is that the Chinese- prepared noodles are the best noodles anywhere in the world. Thanks for a wery informative and entertaining hub. Let me be a member of your fans club!
