Cell phones are inovative devices dating back to 1973 from the inventor martin cooper. The cell phone was originally 30 ounces and most likely ran on Nickel Cadmium a heavier type of battery supply. Current phones have many different types of batteries the most common one being lithium ion.

Besides lithium ion there are also slim cell phone batteries which are thinner than the regular battery supplied with the phone but offer less power for talking and for the phones stand by time. Standard cell phone batteries are generally included with the purchase of your phone and provide a good balance between size and amount of power denoted for talk and stand by. There are extended cell phone batteries that provide the most amount of power but are thicker than standard batteries and may require an extension to the panel in the back of your phone.

Nickel Cadmium Cell Phone Batteries

NiCD short for Nickel Cadmium batteries were very popular in the 80's and 90's they are much heavier than modern phone batteries and required a full disconection from the phone body to charge or they will lose capacity in their memory. NiMH short for Nickel Metal Hydride batteries were used in the late 90's and are still used in a few phones today, most specifically phones designed for picking up signals far out of normal telecomunication range. NiMH do not have the memory of the Nickel Cadmium it replaced but it is smaller and lighter to make up for it. Li-Ion short for Lithium Ion batteries are the most common battery on the market and found in most cell phones for sale.

Lithium Ion Batteries

These batteries are small. light and are not affected by charging memory which means they can be charged without having to be fully dish-charged or conditioned from the cell phone body. A unique aspect of the Lithium Ion batteries is that is sometimes requires multiple charging cycles to activate all cells and provide the amount of talk and standby time listed on the market. Li-Poly short for Lithium Poly batteries are the latest technology. These batteries provide the most talk and standby time while susing the smallest and lightest battery cells. Lithium Poly batteries are on the vanguard of cell phone battery technology and like any new inovation it is limited in its availability. The Lithium Poly battery has only been made accesiable for a limited number of cell phones and has not yet gained enough popularity to be mass produced by a manufacturer but you may find them in Lg cell phone batteries or Samsung cell phone batteries.

These batteries do not have the memory effect which mean like the Lithuim Ion batteries they are able to be charged without th need of being dish-charged from the cell phone base. Cell phone batteries pre 21st century were limited in their technology, they were large and bulky and were ineffecient at producing power for talk time. You had to fully seperate the battery from the phone's base or suffer the conciquence of losing your phones memory wich came to be known as the memory affect.

Cell Phone Battery Evolution

As phones progressed through the era like with all technology it developed for the better. New batteries could be designed smaller and give out twice the power following the same path as batteries used in laptop computers. The only setback was deciding what was more important for you, a smaller batter with limited power, or a larger one with much more talk time and standby mode available. It is really a factor of choice until cell phone companies produce a universal battery for all phones that apts for plenty of talk time and standby mode while not being too bulky and in the way. Like with the progression of all things technological cell phones batteries are developing stronger and lighter for you the consumer.
