More On Celtic Heart Tattoos

The Four Categories

Most art historians and Celtic Art enthusiast are quick to break all Celtic art work down to four main categories. These are spirals, step patterns, knotwork, and crosses. While the last two are pretty self explanatory it is a little harder for the uninitiated to figure out what step patterns and spirals might look like. Spirals are usually a combination of different circles that have interconnecting lines and they are spiraling either outward or inward. A step patten is a series of straight lines that form a pattern that looks similar to steps.

Spirals And Their Meaning

Most typically heart tattoos that are done in the Celtic style are done either as spirals or knotwork patterns. The spirals can mean different thigns depending on the direction that they are spinning in. If the spiral is opening to the right side it is considered to be spinning in a clockwise direction just like the sun and therefore they symbolize a connection with the sun and heavens. If however, the spiral is opening tot he left then it is thought to be spinning in a counter clockwise direction and therefore showing a connection with the earth. As far as the meaning and symbolism behind the knotwork based heart tattoos it is typically believed that the knotwork is a never ending knot that is eternally inner connected to itself and thus a great symbol of love.
