Cetic Jewelry Symbolism

Celtic jewelry now has hundreds if not thousands of symbols. When the Celtic culture was thriving for about 900 years between 500 BC to 400 AD there were maybe several dozen Celtic symbols.

The Celts didn't have a written language to tell us what each symbol meant. However by atudying the context in which the various symbols were used help to identify Celti symbol meanings. Also the history of  the Celt's enemies gives us some information as well.

One of the most popular styles of Celtic jewelry symbols is the Mandala which is the Sanskrit for "circle". Celtic symbols are almost all geometric designs. Put the designs into a circle and you have a Celtic Mandala. Celtic jewelry used mandala's frequently.

As was earlier mentioned, now days there are far more Celtic jewelry symbols that during the original Celtic culture especially in sterling silver. Jewelry designers can through some artistic geometric symbols together and call it any kind of Celtic Jewelry symbol they want. It's common to have Celtic knots with Irish or Scotish Surnames when in reality it's like a modern day coat of arms but had no reality in the days of the Celts.

That's why relying too much on what Internet guides say about the meanings of Celtic symbols is risky for the sake of accuracy it doesn't really matter since compared to the rich Celtic culture we know so little about e can all appreciate the Celt's artistry both ancient and modern.
