Cereal Nutrition Facts: Top 5 Sugar Cereals
71One day in the grocery store I decided to pick up the usual Raisin Bran healthy cereal when I was tempted by a box of Trix. I thought I should avoid the Trix due the high perceived sugar content. Much to my surprise, Raisin Bran cereal contained significantly more amounts of sugar than the Trix! This is when I started really looking at sugar content along with other nutritional information. Below I have listed many popular cereals and their sugar serving per serving size. Most of them you do expect to contain a lot of sugar.
Many brands like General Mills offer a line of cereals with 75% less sugar than the regular brand. Kellogg's lists nutritional features like fiber and sugar content on the front of the box. Cereal companies have not tried to hide the amount of sugar in product, but are we all actually looking?
Top 5 Sugars Cereal
1. Raisin Bran (any brand) contained 19 grams of sugar per serving
2. Raisin Nut ran contained 14 grams per serving
3. Fiber One Raisin Bran Crunch contains 13 grams of sugar per 1/2 cup
4. Smart Start Strong Heart contains 14 grams per serving
5. Golden Crisp contains 14 grams per serving
Many of the above contain high fiber and additional nutrients that are appealing. Most of us don't like the cardboard taste of pain fiber cereal so sugar is added to these for flavor. Now as one note the sugar from raisins is a different type of sugar than from Golden Crisp. This is total sugar, natural and added.

Thanks for the note, I indicated that it is total sugars both added and natural.
Wow, thanks for the information. I didn't realize so much sugar was in Raisin Bran.

Before you post something like this, you may want to check where the sugar is coming from. In Raisin Bran, a great deal of it is coming from raisins which is a completely different sugar than the one found in Trix. Thus, diabetics can tolerate Raisin Bran, but not Trix.
