Perception is Everything

Many things in this world are not as they appear. Over our lifetime we tend to spend too much time believing our eyes and not enough time realizing that vision is just one sense and it's not always accurate. Based on the way we perceive what we see, artists have found ways to "trick" the eyes into seeing things in fantastic 3D even if they are completely flat. We've all seen those trick pictures and were amazed when we saw a still picture move or a flat picture seem so realistic it looks like we're drawn right into the page.

There is a very famous chalk artist who has the uncanny ability to draw on sidewalks and brick floors, walls and so forth, with such detail and accuracy of 3D perception that he can actually trick your eyes into thinking the object is up to 3 feet off the ground!

Below are the latest drawings I've found, they were actually in an email my girlfriend sent me. These are all flat yet many look so incredibly 3D that you will be baffled how he did it!

Enjoy!

Amazing 3D from flat drawing!

Completely a flat sidewalk chalk drawing it looks incredibly real and as if it's verticle!

This is just incredible... remember its FLAT on the ground!

Kinda strange but incredibly 3D none the less!

Your right -- perspective is everything! Imagine seeing those upside-down.

I posted a hub with a bunch of these a while back, but these were the next set. I want to hire the guy to paint an area around my mansion (when I get it), I'm totally intrigued by not just how he makes them look 3D even appearing to move in some cases, but the brilliant details just trip me out! It's chalk!

These pictures are amazing. I would love to see them in real life. I wonder what they would look like from a different angle.

I'd think he'd be worried about rain when he was in the middle of doing one of his chalk drawings?? They look like they would take a long time to complete??

Hadn't seen this before and really enjoyed learning about it. The movement part is the most amazing aspect to me.

1. What if he's using permanent chalk, i.e. water proof chalk mixed with ink or something?

2. Maybe for these drawings he is using actual paint

3. I'd think he would use some form of protective coating on it after hes done that would "seal" it into the sidewalk forever and make it water proof.  I'll have to ask him when I hire him to paint my mansion later :)

4. What if he lays down a coating that can be peeled off later below then draws on the coated sidewalk, then puts another coat above the chalk sealing it in between two layers of coating and this protects it, and makes it portable... I'd think he'd of thought of this. I bet the cities he paints these in do something during rainy weather to cover it.
