How To Change Dynamic IP Address

I am a strong believer in the right to surf anonymously and not having somebody look over your shoulders everywhere that you go. The Internet, much like wider society, is becoming like the big brother house. I believe that we should all have the right to read articles, contribute in forums, and browse for products without that site knowing far too much about you as a result. And that is where changing your dynamic IP address can come in. Before you proceed, you must first establish whether or not your modem supports dynamic IP's. Most modern modems will, but older modems or crap modems will not; if you have a 'static' IP then this will not work.

Stage 1

  • Step 1: Click on the 'Start' menu on the bottom left hand corner of the screen
  • Step 2: Click on 'Run'
  • Step 3: Type in 'command' and hit ok/press enter

Stage 2

You should now be on the MSDOS prompt screen

  • Step 4: Type 'ipconfig /release' and press 'enter'
  • Step 5: Type 'exit' and leave the MSDOS prompt screen
  • Step 6: Right click on 'Network places' or 'My Network places' on your desktop
  • Step 7: Click on 'properties'

Stage 3

You should now be on a screen entitled 'Local Area Connection' or similar.

  • Step 8: Right click on 'Local Area Connection' and click 'Properties'
  • Step 9: Double-click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' from the list under the 'General' tab
  • Step 10: Click on 'Use the following IP address' under the 'General' tab
  • Step 11: Now create your own IP address, it doesn't matter what it is, just fill the area up, just type loads of numbers until the field is full.
  • Step 12: Press 'Tab' and the 'Subnet Mask' section should automatically be filled with default numbers.
  • Step 13: Press the 'OK' button
  • Step 14: Press the 'OK' button again.

Stage 4

You should now be back to the 'Local Area Connection' screen.

  • Step 15: Right-click on 'Local Area Connection' again, and go back to properties.
  • Step 16: Go back to the 'TCP/IP' settings
  • Step 17: Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically'
  • Step 18: Press 'OK'
  • Step 19: Hit 'OK' again
  • Step 20: Congratulations you now have a new IP address!!!

Important Notes

  • This method will only change your dynamic IP address, not your ISP/IP address, if you are planning to use this to do something silly like hack into a website - with a little effort, it is possible for this IP address to be tracked back. If you are changing it because you don't want a forum owner or the general Internet population to know your IP address, then this method will work fine.
  • Although it looks long winded, as opposed to using a Proxy server, I have managed to take this process down to about 30 seconds. A new IP address in 30 seconds is not bad going! It might take you a couple of minutes for the first couple of attempts.
  • This will NOT work on all routers. If it doesn't, you should still have the option of changing your IP address from the wireless setup.
  • You need to try and determine whether or not you have a dynamic IP or a static IP, if you have a static IP then this could completely mess up your modem. I take no responsibility for those that do not check their own modem specifications.
  • Everything that I know about changing Dynamic IPs is on this hub, if you are having difficulty or you can't interpret the text, then unfortunately you may need to head back to google. I have about as much desire to answer questions on this topic as you do to put your fist through your monitor, for most people this means "no desire whatsoever"; apologies. This is why I have decided to remove the comment box from this hub, for the first time ever.
