Come take a journey with me, a bit in the past, but always memorable.

Winding trails. Thoughts of a location unseen, slicing through the air on a four-wheeled contraption.. Fork in the road; let's go left. Sounds good, keep on moving. Dodging trees, kicking up dead leaves. Nope not this way; turn around. Fork in the road; let's go right. Winding, twisting and slowly working our way towards being lost. No, no, we're going to find it. Fork in the road; turn left. Down the mountain-side, thumb on the trottle, unknowingly heading back towards the beginning of our journey. Slowing down, looking towards the left and we see a sign, "POSTED".

Yep, that looks like where we want to go. If we're not supposed to be there, 9 times out of 10 that's where we want to be. Edging closer towards the forbidden land. Ah yes, this is it! Rock walls, rock roof, and pitch black for a doorway. In my head we were taking the ATV in there, we had no light source; but we had headlights. Convincing my partner in crime of the possibility of entry; he slowy edged the machine closer, lighting our path ahead. Yep we're taking it in there.

Peering in, listening to the sounds of water drops, ready for the unknown. Walking ahead of the rumbling ATV, I guided the way. Glancing at the mineral crusted ceiling, I noticed a living creature. That's right my friends; we're in bat country, literally. Pressing on, reading phrase upon phrase of poorly crafted graffiti. Last dated marking; five years past. Noticing remnants of other cave dwellers: a burnt lawn chair, candles, a rusty lantern. Where have they gone? Were the bats not enough to feed them? They just up and left. The walls are closing in now, the path's too narrow. I'm guessing we should turn back.

Back under the low ceilings and through the shallow puddles. Pausing when we got to the hanging points of our winged-mice friends. One was not happy. How can they sleep with this motor running in their home? Swooping towards us, trying to push us back down into the darkness. I'm holding my ground. Rev that engine! I'm sorry son we're getting through. He must of known we meant business; as he turned and flew out where we intended to go. As if to say: "Fine come out this way, but get out, please" Knowing how kind bats really are, I'm sure he said please.

And we're back to daylight. A breath of fresh air, a sense of accomplishment. There's a first time for everything folks, and this time was my first time taking a four-wheeler into a cave. We're going back sometime, prepared; flashlights in hand.

I do a lot of mine exploring and it could have got very interesting in the wrong way. Quite a lot of puddles are several hundred meters deep around here. Sounds like a stone quarry (underground) . Check out www.mine-explorer.co.uk for some of the stuff we go in. The Milwr tunnel is about as good as it gets around here. Some of the stuff in my area is about 1km deep......

Spelunking in the News

  • Rumble On The RoadThe Star19 hours ago

There was much to explore and experience at the BRATs Year-End Journey in Pahang recently.

  • Yuletide missives miss the markSt. Petersburg Times3 days ago

This is probably a Scrooge-esque impolitic question, but does anyone really, really, really care that the offspring of someone you barely know went spelunking in Antigua over the past year?

  • Celebrate the ugly sweaterThe Gillette News-Record3 days ago

It hurts to say it, but not all sweaters are created equal. Some are doomed from the very first stitch. The ones with puppies and/or kittens on the front. The ones with psychedelic neon coloring. The ones with jangling bells.
