The Pug is a toy breed of dog with a wrinkly face and medium-small body. It originated in China and from China the Dutch traders brought it to Europe and for this reason it was believed by many to be from the Netherlands. In the 19th century it became widely popular as a pet in England, where it was favored by women of the nobility. Since then it has became increasingly popular as a pet.
Pugs are sociable, playful, charming, clever and obedient dog but they are usually stubborn about certain things. Pugs are sensitive to the tone of a human voice, so a harsh punishment is generally unnecessary. Even if Pugs get along well with other dogs and pets, but like most pet dogs they prefer the company of humans and needs a great deal of human attention, they may become slightly anxious if their master ignores them or does not play with them; however some may happily occupy themselves when the owner is away. In general, they are very attentive dogs, always at their owner's feet, in their lap, or following where ever they go. Pugs are prone to obesity, so a good diet and plenty of exercise is important.
Physical Appearance:
- Built: The pug has a short compact body, large round head, square blunt muzzle (nose and mouth), dark prominent eyes, and small soft ears that generally fold forward close to the head. It has a sturdy muscle. It has a tightly curled tail that lies on either side of its back; a tail with a double curl is considered perfect.
- Height and Weight: Standing about 10 inches (25cm) high and weighing about 14 to 18 pounds (6-8 kg).
- Coat: The pug has a smooth, short, and glossy coat that requires little care. Its color may be silver, apricot fawn (light yellowish-brown), or black. Its muzzle, mask, and ears are black, and there is a black trace along its back from the top of the skull to the tail. The preferred color for the pug is fawn because fawn makes an attractive contrast with the dark markings.
- Life Span: About 10 -15 years.
