Before deciding on an insurance company you should first consider what kind of insurance you want. Cheap car insurance for young drivers doesn't come easy, but there are a great amount of UK insurance companies that can offer you a deal with a reasonable price.

Third Party Only car insurance (TPO) A TPO insurance policy covers only the other persons car if you have an accident. It may also cover their medical expenses, as well as any passengers in both your car and theirs. This is assuming the fault of the accident is yours.

Your car is not covered in an accident and it will be up to you to cover all the costs pertaining – such as towing or scrapping the car. You would then have to buy for yourself another car. 

As far as fire and theft goes, you're not covered.

Third Party Fire and Theft (TPFT) A TPFT insurance policy is very much the same as a TPO above, except that it does cover you for fire (which generally means any damages caused to the car by natural disasters or events out of your hands) and theft.

Fully Comprehensive Insurance (Fully Comp.) This is the best insurance policy you can get, but also – obviously – the most expensive. It'll cover everything that TPFT covers except that it will also cover your car in an accident, as well as certain of your medical expenses. This means that if your car is a write-off they will pay the book value of the car to you.

So which one to choose? Well, a lot depends on the type of car you have. If you have a cheap or old car there actually is no sense in going Fully Comprehensive. Why? Well, you'll end up paying more to the insurance company than the car is actually worth. It's best rather to save that money on your own.

However, if you have a newer car, Fully Comprehensive may even be cheaper. Furthermore, many new car dealerships are offering three years free insurance if you buy a new car through them. That can be a substantial saving.

Finding an insurance company Use the internet to find an insurance company. Many online insurance companies offer cheap car insurance to young drivers as well as a number of incentives: A ten percent discount for accepting the policy online; or fast-tracked no claims bonuses where you can get a no-claims discount after just nine months.

Comparison websites are very helpful. You can search under a set amount of variables to suit your needs, and then let the website find the better price for you.
