Lucky To Have A Sears In The Sixties

I wasn't that lucky. I would have died for a Sears guitar. They were known for the Danelectros... still cheap but at least they're sought after now in the vintage market.

As I recall, my first guitar came from a hardware store. I vaguely remember a strap made from a red piece of yarn. Pretty sad. I don't think it held a tune a full day of it's life and it hurt to play it... but I didn't know any better.

Still Cheap, Much Better Quality

When it comes to electric guitars it seems that inflation hasn't worked like it should. Today cheap electric guitars are far superior in quality to anything we had a generation ago.

Due to the recent death of the great guitar creator Les Paul, I was looking over some of the new Gibson Les Paul guitars.  I was surprised to see brand new Gibson Melody Maker's on the market for $400.  That is pretty inexpensive for a Gibson Les Paul.

What shocked me however was the price of Epiphone's Les Paul design guitars.  Keep in mind that Epiphone is owned by Gibson so they can build guitars with the actual Les Paul name.  The Epiphone Les Paul Special II runs a mere $170.  An Epiphone Les Paul 100, which is a much better replica is priced right at $300.

Of course $170 would have been a couple months mortgage back when I was a kid but today that's not bad.  This is a guitar that Gibson associates their Les Paul name with.  This isn't the cheap electric guitar a previous generation suffered with.

Big Names, Cheap Prices

Another thing I've noticed is that the cheap electric guitars today are not no name brands. They are names like Epiphone, Fender, Ibanez, or PRS as a few examples. These are companies that make guitars into the thousands of dollars,  yet they are able to make low priced guitars today that are nothing to be ashamed of.

Carpe Diem

Who hasn't dreamed of playing electric guitar in front of a thousand screaming fans?  If playing the guitar is something you always wished you could do, then seize the day.  A cheap electric guitar today does not mean poor construction with a red yarn strap.  There is minimal risk with the price of these guitars today so get out there and make your dreams come true.
