Modifying a car is a great way to spend your spare time if you have a love of driving, showing off to your friends and burning as much of your hard earned money as you possibly can. There can be few things that we do in life that can drain our finances so completely as rebuilding a car but we do it because we love it. You see we don't mind spending every penny we make on our project because when the job is done we have a beautiful vehicle hand built by ourselves which gives us a great deal of pleasure. Its true that car insuring a car is expensive for most people these days but custom insurance policy prices are beyond a joke.

I'm afraid we're stuck with high prices but there are a few things we can do to bring the cost down a little. Firstly, we have to do as much research as possible to ensure that we are getting the best price possible, don't just settle for the first price you get and you definitely don't want to get your quote from the same company who insures your ford fiesta that you use for commuting.

Thankfully these days finding the cheapest car insurance for modified vehicles is a little easier than it was in the past thanks to the Internet. Get online and do a search for companies specializing in custom cars and you will immediately see reductions in the quotes you get. Regular insurers don't have a clue about the car we build and seem to err on the side of caution when plucking a number out the air when deciding how much they are going to charge us.

At least the specialist insurer understands how much our car means to us and how well we look after them. Also, just because we have build a performance vehicle doesn't mean we are going to hammer it at every opportunity. When I spend time building an engine I want it to last and will treat it with a respect amongst drivers of regular cars.

Another thing you can do to get cheaper insurance is to wait until you are a bit older before moving on from standard cars. I know this is popular but if you are under 25 years old then premiums are going to be horrible even for minor modifications. Drive a  standard car for a few years, build up some experience and no claims bonus and you will be rewarded in the future.

Also, many drivers fail to do it to get a quote before they start making modifications. This is a mistake as once the mods have been carried out at great cost, you really have no one to blame but yourself. Get an online quote before you get started so you know where you stand ahead of time.
