Cheap Solar Panels DIY

Cheap Solar Panels DIY are a cheap way of cutting your electricity bills at home. This Hub looks at how electricity is produced and begins the debate about how we can all help save the planet by using alternative energy solutions.

How electricity is produced

Electrical energy is possibly man’s most incredible achievemnets. Through harnessing electricity man has created the possibility of civilisation and transport and maybe the most important thing light. For the most part electrictiy production has its source in fossil fuels, nuclear fission, water, and wind. This hub will explore the different methods of electricity production.

Electricity is churned out by enormous turbines. These turbines need a support to be moved. There are various ways of moving these turbines- continued further on...

About Solar Power...

The greatest benefit of solar energy is that it does not pollute. Before learning how to build a solar panel, you would have noticed fossil and nuclear fuel have been causing problems in our green environment. But beyond that, we are also becoming very dependent on these options, and the majority of what we use is produced outside of our own countries. This also leads us to dependence on the foreign exporter including the fluctuating pricing.

The sun is a natural energy, and maintains the earth's ecological balance. Oil and its derivatives, on the other hand produce a great amount of pollutants. To supply the average home with electricity for a year, 22,000 pounds of carbon monoxide will be produced during the processing of the needed oil.

How Electricity is made

Continued from above...

  1. Burning fossil fuels: Electricity is made when the blades of a turbine are turned by huge amounts of vapour. This vapour is created by boiling water in large furnaces. The water is heated by burning fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, and natural gas. This method releases enormous amounts of carbon dioxide in the air, thus severely polluting our atmosphere. It is important to turn to alternate methods of electricity production for long-term benefits.
  2. By water: Huge reservoirs or dams- A popular method to produce electricity, a water dam serves two purposes: restricting water bodies and producing electricity. Water dams use the river water to rotate the turbines, thereby producing electricity. Electricity generated this way helps control air pollution; however, this method of electricity production adversely affects the ecosystem in the water bodies.
  3. Water accounts for 90% of the planet’s electricity generated through renewable resources.
  4. Solar panels do not create noise pollutions. They are relatively silent to operate. If you have ever come across oil drills, rigs, and pumps, you’ll know that living with these systems are a soar to the ear. They can be heard for quite a large radius. As oil becomes more in demand, the locations of theses generators are appearing almost everywhere. Therefore, many residential and farming communities are being forced to deal with this form of noise pollution.
  5. By wind: Electricity is created when wind energy is converted to electrical energy. Windmills or wind turbines are used to churn up enormous amounts of wind energy which is then transfered into electrical energy. The latest in wind energy advancement tells us that wind energy is used to create portable cell phone chargers.
  6. In many aspects, the use of solar panels is very environmentally friendly, plus the maintenance on the solar panels is fairly minimal, aside from the mechanical parts. Not forgetting solar energy is a natural resource; therefore, it is free and unlimited in supply. The pricing is extremely volatile as well, dependent not only on current supply and demand but on political situations too.
  7. By nuclear fission: Yes, nuclear fission does not only make atom bombs, but also creates electricity. Nuclear fission causes a chain reaction where the element Uranium is bombarded by neutrons causing it to split. Every time a Uranium nucleus is split, more neutrons are released, causing more splits in the already split Uranium nuclei. The resultant chain reaction generates a lot of heat which is used to heat water the vapour of which eventually moves turbines to create electricity. A fairly dangerous technique but very efficient.
  8. By bio-waste: With technological advancements, electricity is also being produced by bio-waste. Bio-gas is a typical way of generating electricity in rural areas in countries like India. In fact, a new technology evolved in the state of Bihar in India that uses human waste to generate electricity. Bio-waste is a great advancement in the creation of electricity but there is a debate as to whether it's right to grow plants for electricity when there are people who maybe could eat this food.

The use of solar energy is free; however, the start up costs and installation can be expensive. However kits are available and you can even do the whole intall for yourself remarkably cheaply if you have a good guide. This does tend to pay off eventually through the savings in electrical bills. On top of that, there are tax incentives offered in many locations by governments to encourage the use of solar panels. Do check with your area for such existing incentives to maximize your benefits. If you want to save more cost on the start up and installation, you may want to do the installation yourself.
