The price of car insurance has continued to rise over the past decade. Even though the competitive landscape has become enriched with the addition of numerous car insurance providers, the average premiums for car insurance have continued to increase. These rising costs have had special meaning for student drivers, because student car insurance typically costs more than a standard car insurance policy.

Students Can Exert Control

Fundamentally speaking, a person going to school can do a number of things to try and obtain a cheap student car insurance policy in order to lower their overall costs. First off, students need to understand that they are looked upon as a higher risk by most car insurance companies. There are several reasons for this, and the primary ones are their age, especially if they are a teenager, and their relatively thin driving record. Insurance companies look at these factors and immediately think that the driver is more liable to get into an accident or some other altercation. There isn’t much a student driver can do about their age, but there are some things a student can do to improve their driving record.

Before we get into those things in detail, one of the first ways a student can establish a cheap car insurance policy is by making sure that they have been added to someone else’s policy. If the student can join another policyholder’s plan, they typically will receive some kind of discount. This is perfect for students that have parents who are willing to let them join their policies. Just be sure that if you are the student you understand fully the terms of your joint-policy, and that your parents have insurance plans that wouldn’t cost more than the standard rates you would have to pay if you didn’t join their policy.

Ways to Get Cheap Car Insurance for Students

Now getting back to a student’s driving record. There are several fairly obvious things a student can do to improve their driving record over time. First off, make sure that you avoid accidents, and other negative marks such as traffic violations as much as possible. Car insurance companies frown upon these kinds of marks, and they will penalize you in correlation with the number, and severity of incidents you are involved in. The longer you drive and maintain a clean driving record, the more trust will be established with your company. This will translate into a cheaper policy, with either discounts, or rates in general being lowered due to your solid driving record.

Most students don’t realize that car insurance companies reward students that do well academically in school. The insurance companies view students that get good grades and achieve academically as better candidates for insurance. They trust these students more so than your average student, and will thus lower their premiums and provide other discounts as long as the student can provide the necessary documents.

If you are a college student, you may be able to take advantage of living away from home while you are at college. Some car insurance companies offer discounts to college students who live a certain distance from their native home. Most companies that offer these sorts of discounts require that you live at least a certain amount of miles away from your hometown. As long as you qualify, this can be a quick way to lower your payments, and to obtain a cheaper insurance policy.

It is also very important for a student to maintain a good credit score and credit history, as car insurance companies correlate people with good credit histories as a lesser risk because of their lower likelihood to get into an accident. This is something that most companies adopt without hesitation. Many students have difficulty establishing a credit history, but unfortunately the car insurance companies don’t really consider this, and therefore it is often times an uphill battle for students. Regardless of their ability to establish a credit history, the most essential thing a student can do is to make sure they at least don’t ruin their credit in some way. This will raise red flags with most insurance companies, and the particular student will many times observe higher premiums right off the bat.

In Conclusion

There are several other things a student driver can do to obtain a cheap student car insurance policy. By taking a defensive driving course, a student driver can easily receive a discount at most companies. The rates are sometimes drastically reduced if a student finishes the course since their driving abilities are being improved. As a result of taking this class, insurance companies will view the student as less of a risk of getting into a car accident or receiving a speeding ticket. The student should also be aware that the make and model of the car they drive can impact their premiums. More expensive, newer, and higher-performance cars all cost more when it comes to car insurance. Another quick way to reduce your payments is by adjusting the terms on your own particular policy. This can be done by raising your deductible, or by makings some kind of lump-sum payments upfront.

In the end there are an abundance of ways a student can lower their monthly premiums to obtain a cheap car insurance policy. It all starts by becoming informed, and then following through with the appropriate actions. The good thing is that most car insurance companies are fairly reasonable, even with students, and that if you follow some of the steps outlined within this article you should be well on your way to finding a cheap car insurance policy.
