The first thing you need to do if you have decided to start skateboarding is either buy or borrow a skateboard. You will need to get comfortable standing on your cheap skateboards before we recommend you trying any tricks. If you purchased a skateboard you have never used before or borrowed one from a friend there may be some things uncomfortable to you starting out on it. Go outside in the grass and stand on your board and move your feet in different directions allowing you to get a good feel for it.

Hopefully by now you feel comfortable on your cheap skateboards. Next you will need to decide what skateboard stance will be the right one for you. You have to different types of skateboard stances (regular or goofy). This means you will either skate with your right foot foward or your left foot, whichever one feels better to you. If you feel better with your left foot foward than your right this is know as a regular stance but if you feel better with your right foot forward instead of your left then you will be goofy. It does not matter what stance you are as long as you are comfortable on the skateboard. If you are having trouble deciding which foot should go where here is an example- If someone was to come up to you and push you backwards and you had both feet together which foot would you catch yourself with? The foot you caught yourself with will be your balance foot and should probably be the foot that goes on the back of the board.

OK by now you should have a good feel for your cheap skateboards and know which stance is best for you. Now you will need to take your skateboard outside on the street or sidewalk and lets learn how to push your skateboard. Put your front foot just behind the front trucks and use your back foot to push off with so that the skateboard starts rolling forward. Whenever you start to slow down just take your back foot and push off the ground again. Keep practicing skating around until you feel like you have it down pretty good and are comfortable riding.

Now lets learn to turn the cheap skateboards. There are several different ways to do this, you can either lean on your front toes or heals in the directions you want to go or balance on the back of the board known as the tail. This will cause the front of the board to lift into the air and you want to swing the front of the board (nose) in the direction you want to go. Keep in mind the second one will take a lot more practice to get down just right.

Last we will learn how to stop. The easiest way for you to stop is by foot breaking. Take your back foot off the board and gently touch it to the ground with your front foot still on the board, the more pressure you apply the faster you stop. Don’t forget this will take practice before you get the hang of it just like anything else. Another way to stop is (heel dragging). Take the back of your heel on the back foot and let it lean of the back of the skateboard, lean back or push down on the back of the board so that the front start to rise up. Let the back of your heel drag the ground with the other half still on the back of the board, you should feel the heel dragging and you coming to a stop. If you ever get to where you cant stop the best thing to do is to jump of your board, jumping forward of the board will normally cause the cheap skateboards to stop. You may want to practice this standing still before trying to stop while skating because there may be a few times you land on your back and the board go flying forward.
