Cheap Manhattan hotels

New York city is expensive, lets face it. Even going to a museum these days is going to throw you back a few twenties so if you're visiting you are going to want a nice an affordable place to rest your head, that's not a complete dump. Easier said than done? Maybe. I've compiled a list of six reasonable hotels that aren't the Plaza, but are places where you don't have to worry about roaches crawling over your face at night. Enjoy!
If you aren't looking for a hip New York hotel and plan on keeping busy and sleeping at your room, but not spending too much time in there why not try a Howard Johnson's? With several NYC locations you can find a room for a little over a hundred dollars, and that includes a continental breakfast.
If you're going to be in the East Village and don't mind perusing the cafes for your meals you can try the East Village Bed and Coffee which is a bed and breakfast located on Avenue C. Eclectic furnishings, and themed guest rooms make your stay interesting, but you will share common rooms and bathroom facilities with other guests. Rooms starting at $80
Union Square is a cute, hip area to stay in and if you plan on it try The Union Square Inn where a room can start at only $99. Close to the East Village, and NYU this hotel is fairly basic in décor, and you'll be near tons of fun shops, parks and museums.
For the adventurous the Union Square Inn boosts a sister youth-hostel near Central Park! You can stay in a ten bedroom dorm for only $26 per night which will save you tons of money for sight seeing and splurging on some great New York restaurants. If sharing with nine strangers isn't your thing, you can splurge on a private room for about $85 dollars.
Harlem isn't the terrifying place it was once in the past, and if you're headed uptown try the Harlem Flophouse where you can stay in a simple room named after famous Jazz harpists like Corky Hale. With only four guest rooms, and two bathrooms with antique claw foot tubs your in for a cozy stay if you make reservations. Rooms start at $100.
If you're going to be on the West Side try The Newton Hotel which is a bit larger boosting 105 rooms featuring basic amenities like mini fridges and microwaves. This hotel was rated one of the best budget hotels with rooms starting at a little over $100.

I think the Harlem Flophouse looks like it has the most charecter! You can't go wrong with a smaller hotel either...more cozy and you have the chance to meet interesting people!

Great advice and thank you alphabetsoup. "Harlem Flophouse"! I might stay at that one for the name alone!
