Cheapest Car Insurance for Young Driver

The Cheapest Car Insurance For a Young Driver

There is such a thing as cheap car insurance for young drivers. Sure, a young driver gets the rawest deal in the UK when we talk about car insurance, but that doesn't mean that every car insurance company is out to give you a raw deal. While the mainstream companies may not care about you or your business, other companies do – and these are the companies you need to be looking for.

A young driver like you is more likely to be involved in a drink-driving or reckless driving conviction than drivers in older age groups. This is based on research and statistics. We often see on the UK news stories about young reckless drivers, such as the young driver in Burntwood in 2008 who was caught powersliding around a traffic island. His antics got him a 13 month jail sentence. But he isn't the only one – in 2009 we saw another 23 year old driver in the same area also powersliding, which got him a £600 fine and a ban from the road of 12 months.

Surveys also show that the number of young drivers who will admit that they are often drink-driving or on drugs while driving is very high. Insurance companies therefore charge young people the prices that they do – they're not going to be happy if you claim from them after only paying a week or a few month's premiums. They are here to make money, after all.

But this doesn't mean that they should not do something for the young driver who does not (or will not) drink-drive, drive on drugs, or drive recklessly. Unfortunately, the bad apples make it difficult for the good apples in this case; but that does not mean that insurance companies should act as if their hands are tied. They should formulate plans to reward those that go against the statistics.

The kind of companies that do this are usually small and often run their business off the Internet. The Internet has created new ways of doing business and has made it easier for smaller insurance companies to garner the market that, traditionally, they would have no access to. Likewise, it gives you the opportunity to find these golden nuggets when, traditionally, you would have to rely on the only names you know (who are the big mainstream companies) or the local companies you know.

To help your cause and get the cheapest car insurance for a young driver there are a few things you can do.

Firstly, you can look at advanced driving courses. The Pass Plus is the most well known, and developed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Doing this course can get you anything from 10 to 25 percent off of your insurance premium. Plus, you might even be able to get the government to pay for your costs in taking the course.

If you can organise a flexible payment scheme, you may be able to save through paying annually or bi-monthly as well.

Also, be careful of added extras on your policy that you don't need – such as 'free' services or 'discounts' at certain stores. You do pay for these in the end, even if they call it free.

Also, see if you can find a secure place to park your car in the day or at night, which would bring your premiums down (if you inform them). Added security in your car will help as well in attaining the cheapest car insurance.
