Checking Your Brake Fluid
54Maintenance of your vehicle can seem a rather daunting task. There are so many components that need to be taken care of and consistently maintained. There is so much more than just checking your oil and changing it as needed. Brake fluid is another major component of your vehicle that must be taken care of. This is especially important for those with vehicles that are no longer on warranty. The last thing you need is to neglect your car and face damages that could cost a lot of money. By checking your brake fluid, this is one vital area that will not cost you later.
The maintenance of your braking is system is easily one of the most essential tasks for both your safety and the well being of your vehicle. The brakes on your car are literally the lifeline to everything around you. Stopping your car must be effective and having the right amount of brake fluid plays a large role in that. Do not forget about this part of your car’s performance, especially if you have children. There is simply no room for negligence when safety is at stake.
When you go to check your brake fluid, it’s a good idea to know where to look. The brake master cylinder is what holds the fluid. It is located on the driver’s side of the vehicle, towards the back end of the engine. It is a rectangular box that is metal and has a rubber cap on the top of it. If you are not entirely sure what to look for, check out your owner’s manual in order to see a diagram of the master cylinder. A Google search should find you some helpful videos or photos as well.
On older vehicles you may not be able to see through the reservoir. This means that you will have to take the cap off to look inside it. Most new cars have a clear reservoir so that you can easily see through it. There is a line that indicates where the fluid should be when it is full. If the fluid is not up to the full line then add some more brake fluid until it is. Be careful not to put in more than what is indicated on the reservoir though. Too much is not good either.
Your owner’s manual should give a clear indication of what type of brake fluid you should be using. A certain grade is needed and if you were to use anything else, it could cause problems for your braking system. If the fluid reservoir is very empty, then you should consider having it filled by a professional and checked over for possible problems. It does not hurt to have your brake system checked out routinely by a mechanic that you know and trust. Brakes need to be maintained no matter what so do not make the mistake of putting it off. Checking your brake fluid is really just the beginning. Keep your car a safe place so that you never have to worry, because you know everything is in good shape.

Pretty comprehensive I would say. A couple of extra pics with different reservoir forms and placements may help :)
