Cherry Writing Desks | Cherry Wood Writing Desks | Cherry Office Furniture

Cherry writing desks are some of the most beautiful and popular around.  Cherry wood is renowned for its natural beauty and for the easy way that this type of lumber can be molded and shaped to make any type of furniture.  Cherry wood office furniture is likely to remain popular since there simply aren't many types of wood out there that bring the deep red hue (with cedar and mahogany that might be the two most common other than cherry) that makes a cherry writing desk one of the most beautiful and most popular styles of writing desks around.  The bad news in trying to nail down a quality cherry writing desk is that many modern office desks aren't wood, but wood finish.  Because of that, finding a desk with a cherry finish is much easier than finding an actual fully wood desk.  Still, even with a finish these are good looking pieces of furniture that are also amazingly functional.  If you have a home office, or want that perfect area to set down and write, finding a fantastic cherry writing desk is still the way to go.

Cherry Writing Desks: An Evolution

Cherry writing desks have changed immensely since they first appeared on the scene. The initial models of cherry desks would be similar to the original correspondence desks or tables from as far back as the 1500s or even before. Writing was not something that was common back then, as only nobles, aristocracy, and the clergy often had the education to read or write. Because of this, many early designs of this now popular office furniture would be far smaller than modern cherry writing desks.

There were variations, but many would look like small correspondence desks for the writing of brief letters. These would be much smaller than any modern design of an office desk, and in some cases might include a hutch, or else be a rolltop desk model. Early antique cherry rolltop desks were very popular as they displayed an elegance and a beauty that went along with this idea of sophistication and aristocracy. The early writing desks were there to show off education and status, and the early models of cherry wood writing desks were no exception to that rule.

What Do Cherry Wood Writing Desks Look Like Today?

Cherry writing desks are one of the few styles that still have some strong ties to the more antique designs of office furniture, because the beautiful style of the actual cherry lumber. Most current models are very basic, or else shaped as corner or L-shaped desks in order to maximize space. While there are many current designs of these larger and more common desks that have a cherry finish, there are also many fancy and beautiful designs that show off with an eye to aesthetics.

Because of this, there aren't just the regular office furniture designs, but many cherry wood desks remain that are there for a living room or dining room, or that right little bit of flair for a study without taking up too much space. The color is hard to beat, which is part of the reason why this type of wood is used for decorative desks and writing tables as much as any other.  Once you get a great cherry writing desk, all that's left is a good ergonomic mesh office chair to complete the office.

Hi Nancy,

Yeah, I have a lot of friends who are the same way. I do tend to like the darker woods and the darker stains, although for my money mahogany is hands down my favorite. Thanks for the great comment - I always appreciate the honesty :)
