The Experience

I read a postive review about the Chez Guevara Restaurant in the Knoxville News Sentinal a few months ago, and had been wanting to visit this place ever since. Last Friday night, I finally got my chance. Accompanied by my best friend and my Fiance, we embarked upon our dining experience.

First off, you're probably not going to stumble upon this establishment accidentally. I bet I've drove by this place 100's of times and never noticed it. It's located in the shopping center that contains the Toys'R'Us and Barnes & Noble; if you're not looking for it, you're going to overlook it. However, since it is hidden away, it adds to the appeal of the place. It almost adds mystery to it, which I enjoy in a bar/restaurant.

Upon entering Chez Guevara, the first thing you will notice is all the pictures, memorabilia, and art hanging on the wall. I'm a fan of gawking at all this stuff during my meal, so already I am happy about this place. After a fairly short wait, the hostess seated us-right beside the restrooms and kitchen, not as happy now. Luckily though, our location was not an issue. I never heard noise from the kitchen and foot traffic walking by us was not an issue.

The menu was unique. It contained traditional Mexican food, and Mexican food with a twist. The beer menu was also unique, consisting of a price guide pasted to a 32 ounce Miller High Life can, this brought a smile to my face. After studying both menus for several minutes I decided upon a Cuban Quesadilla and a 32 oz. High Life.

The quesadilla woke my mouth up. The tortillas were filled with ham, chicken, dill pickles, and mustard. Now I'm not a huge fan of dill pickles or mustard, but in this configuration I was very pleased. Every bite was better than the previous. The Cuban is something I would try again.

The beer was priced very well and seemed reasonable, except for the beer I ordered. The beer list contained prices for all the beers except the big High Life which was listed as Market Value. I didn't bother asking what market value was due to the fact you can buy a six pack for less than 4 bucks. I assumed this beer would be less than 4 bucks as well...I was wrong. Upon receipt of the check I discovered I had been charged 6 dollars for a bottom shelf beer. Wow. I could easily think of at least 10 beers that I would pay 6 bucks for, but a High Life is not on that list. Just because it is the Champagne of Beers doesn't mean it should carry the premium price tag. I would not recommend going for this selection when you visit this restaurant.

Overall, I was happy with my Chez Guevara experience. The service wasn't expecially great, but it could've been much worse. The food was of higher quality than a lot of Knoxville's Mexican restaurants. The atmosphere was fun and lively. I definitely recommend that Knoxvillians try this place out at least once.
