Jason Andrews/DJ VERITAS

A London import that has played in virtually every major city our country has to offer, Veritas is a triple threat so beware! He is not only a DJ, but producer as well and dare we say a bit of eye candy. He now chooses to reside in our great city of Chicago where some of the music he specializes in (House) was born. When first setting foot in the states he began a short lived career in professional modeling for international and US designers-short lived because whilst modeling he found inspiration from the industry to produce original tracks-and went on to do live runway shows for the designers he had worked for. His musical perspective of club music is unique taking the grittiness of his UK electro roots intertwined seamlessly with Chicago’s renowned house sound. An ambitious yet carefully sculpted blend of original, sexy minimalist beats overlay-ed with soulful deep-house vocals is what you will hear pumping from the speakers. Hear his minimalist music start to swell and you know the night has only just begun!

A supreme live artist, DJ Veritas truly loves what he is doing, and it shows. If you are having a good time on the dance floor you are bound to catch a glimpse of him bopping to his own beats as well. He feeds off the audience’s energy when grinding the decks. Every show is poetry in motion created between artist and listener each and every night.

Whatever venue he plays, whatever the focus of sound he chooses be it electronic, house, minimalist or a mix of the three; high-energy, sweaty bodies and happy people are bound to follow. The melodic mixes and thumping beats stay with club-goers long after the bartenders shout “Last Call!” Check him out live for yourself if you don’t believe us!

Lauri Apple

At first catching sight of Ms. Apple one might presume she is small, fragile, quiet and a bit of a nerd yet splendidly dressed. Before you know it the question that rolls off your lips is “I love what you are wearing, where did you get it?” The answer might shock you.

You see despite having a Law degree from Cardozo School of Law in New York City; specializing in Itellectual Property no less Ms. Apple spends her working hours in more creative realms. A bit of tumbleweed this woman has found herself in Austin and Pittsburgh working for alternative newsweeklies, and has now settled down in Chicago as of 2007. Her points of interest here are painting, DJing a la IPOD (note her DJ name Lauri Apple Pietunes), as well as continuing her work on her website she started in New York.

Did we forget to tell you why you can find Lauri so finely dressed? Well, her closet might allude that she is indeed a “label whore” as you will find such labels as Armani, BCBG Max Azria, and Club Monaco tucked inside. This however is not true, a label whore makes a point to attain these labels and in Lauri’s case the labels come to her. Are you puzzled yet? Perhaps, the name of her website will quench your curiosity; she is the creator of the website Found Clothing. It’s a website that chronicles and archives clothing and accessories that she and many others find in the trash, lying in the street and sidewalk, which they then rescue, wash, and you guessed it wear! A self-proclaimed trashionista she uses her site as a vehicle to educate the masses on "wastefulness and consumerism run amok" as she puts it as well as advocate recycling and conservation.

This Real Hot 100 Winner of 2006 is always out to ruffle some feathers whether it is through her activism, her reporting or writing, her sometimes political funny paintings, being a volunteer for economic rights groups, or challenging banned books in public schools.

She’s been interviewed by New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and on NBC's Today Show; Lauri Apple is anything, but shy or meek. Don't let her exterior fool you. Approach her at an art gallery opening or a cocktail mixer, but make sure you are up to snuff. She has a sharp quick wit about her, so fast and done with stoic face; her silver tipped tongue might shank you before you know what hit you.

The Chi-Town Project

The Chi Town Project began in 2006. Most of the original members went to college on the Southside. They felt like they were surrounded by poverty and violence and they had a deep desire to be part of the solution.

To replace the things that divided, they started to design their own apparel line that would unite all of Chicago, to instill a sense of pride in our great city. They started researching what our city is about, what made it tick, getting involved in the very communities that make it what it is. Something that was obvious was that Chicago is very rich in diversity. They integrated that concept into all of their designs. The more they learned the deeper the love affair with the city and their project grew.

The more they learned about the individuals that make up this city the more they wanted to give back. That was the moment when the project evolved to so much more than hats and t-shirts. In a world where we are surrounded with products and companies that create a feeling of warmth, caring and compassion and then fail us on the actual delivery of those things; The Chi-Town Project steps up to the plate. In a society that practices “Green-washing” and charitable giving as long as you are looking, The Chi-Town Project means what they say and say what they do.

From t-shirts and hats, to fundraising for charities, they have now reached the next level of their great adventure which is their online magazine celebrating the joys and connection we share by simply being a Chicagoan.

The Chi-Town Project exemplifies how you can take one idea and watch it snowball. The possibilities are endless for them and all of us. The best is yet to come. Check out their site and take part in their movement for an even better city!
