As seen on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives...

The White Palace Grill, in Chicago.

White Palace Grill

Could it be "manna"?

Like ‘manna' from heaven tonight, while my husband and I were watching one of our favorite TV shows, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, the topic for my next HUB fell right out of the sky (or in other words flashed up on the TV screen, you decide.) Guy Fieri, the host of the show, took us on a road trip to three different diners that were open 24/7, hence the title of the show, "Open 24/7." He highlighted three different diners, but naturally the one that caught my attention was the one in Chicago. (I wonder why?)

The coolest job ever!

The guys in my house think Guy Fieri has the coolest job in the world. After entering in The Next Food Network Star contest in 2006, he was selected from the over 10,000 entrants as one of the eight finalists. He charmed the fan base with his charisma and style and became the winner of the contest. He has made sayings like, "that's off the hook," and "that's money" to describe the different foods he likes, popular household words. Coming from Santa Rosa, California, he has an "easy going" laid back beach look, with bleached blond spiky hair and wears beach attire with his sunglasses behind his neck. He drives a vintage convertible across the country looking for hidden restaurant delights and shares them with his TV audience. My guys drool over the wonderful treats he gets served up and they wish they could just go along for the ride.

Back to the Grill

Anyway, last nights adventure took us to a diner in Chicago called The White Palace Grill, that's located at 1159 Canal Street.

Never closed.

This is an old fashioned "greasy spoon" that never closes, where the food is "off the hook." It has been around for 68 years and is still crankin' at all hours of the day or night.

Varied menu with good prices.

It serves everything from hamburgers and shakes, to veal parmesan and short rib dinners. Breakfast is also a specialty, with the Tex-Mex style omelet's and home-made hash browns.

Good atmosphere...

It is known for its varied crowds of college kids, locals and seniors. A few years ago the original diner was demolished and rebuilt giving it a new look and feel The inside is typical of a diner atmosphere, with framed news paper clips lining the walls right next to a mural depicting some of Chicago celebrities. The service is prompt, the food is reasonable and the restaurant is clean.

Celebrity Mural

As Guy would say, "This is the real deal."

Thanks, for signing my Hub. The recipe for the meat balls is very good. I make them and put them on egg noodles. I love Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Wished I could go to all the places Guy Fieri goes to. I guess here the best place would be the White Stag.
