How To Build A Chicken Coup – The Easy Way!
In this article we're going to go through the basics of building a makeshift but functional chicken coup. If you want to make a chicken coup that consists of your whole back yard instead of just a box for the chickens then it's probably going to cost a little more for materials, but the chickens will be happier and able to roam the whole premises.
You start with chicken wire; that all important material for farmers and hobbyists alike. Before you buy your chicken wire though, make sure to measure your yard! I cannot emphasize this enough, measure your yard!
Once you know the dimensions of your yard then buy chicken wire with the same measurements. I would suggest going to a general feed store to find chicken wire, but you can also try online stores; just be sure to type in the dimensions you need, and if necessary buy more than one piece and tie them together with metal or copper wire.
(It can also be a good idea to be extra chatty and nice to the gentleman at the hardware store as you might need to return there to stock up on building supplies sometimes while you're building your chicken coup.)
After you have your chicken wire you're going to need to tie it to either your fence, garage, or other supports around your house. Make sure the chicken coup is tall enough to keep your chickens from flying over it.
The best way to keep the bottom of the chicken coup from being exposed is to make sure about a half a foot of it is dangling from the bottom. Then secure it with tent spikes or some other kind of post. That's it. Now you have a fully functioning chicken fence. Congrats!

Hi Aya!
That's a great question. I have to look into that and get back to you.
Do you have chickens of your own?
Thank you for visiting my Hub!
Yes, I have four. We just got through winterizing by putting in insulation and a heat lamp. The coop designs you have on here seem really airy and open. Are they intended only for places where it doesn't freeze?
That sounds good! To be honest, this is a new passion of mine. So I'll do some more research and then post a new article on winterizing chicken coops. Thanks for the great question! Did you personally read many other tips on how to winterize hen houses before you put insulation and heat lamp in yours?
