Cognitive Development

Your Baby will now begin to imitate your gestures and clap and wave and enjoy playing games like peek-a-boo. She will respond to sounds and look for objects she cannot see. If she drops a toy, she will now look for it.

Your baby will show great interest in what is going on around her and will now enjoy looking at picture books.

She now knows how to get your attentions and you will hear it!

Your baby now has the ability to reach for toys, hold them out to show you and even pass them to you. She will use her toys in a realistic manner like picking up a toy and placing it to her ear like she is on the phone or feeding her teddy bear.

Her attention span is growing and she can now play with one toy for up to 3 minutes without losing interest.

By the end of this period she may be capable of putting simple things together and pulling then apart, like stacked rings or knocking over a tower of blocks. She will now recognise you and all of her loved ones. She will also be able to follow simple instructions.

Physical Development

Your Baby's body temperature can still be affected by external sources (outside temperature, clothes, etc.) But she is maintaining her own temperature more than before.

If her little teeth haven’t shown themselves yet the front two top and bottom may appear now (bottom incisors first then two upper incisors), followed by four more incisors up top and two lower molars.

Her arms and hands are a little more developed than her legs and feet and they may look large in proportion to other body parts. Her legs may still appear to be bowed, but continue to straighten.

Her little feet will appear flat as her foot arches haven't developed completely.

Her eyes are now working in unison and she can see quite a distance (up to 20 feet).

Motor Development

Your baby’s strength is increasing all the time; she is now developing the pincer grasp and can pick up toys and other objects with her finger and thumb. She can now transfer an object from one hand to another and reaches out with one hand to grasp an object or toy. And pass it back to you.

You may see her poking and pointing at things with her index finger. If she finds she is unable to make a toy do what it is supposed to she will now bring it to you to do the job.

You will also catch her throwing and dropping her toys and watching them hit the ground, you’ll notice that she simply releases them as she is still unable to intentionally put an object down.

She can now pull herself up to a standing or sitting position, she has good balance and will sit erect and change positions without falling over. She is starting to practice standing alone and will use furniture to assist her in getting around the place.

By around the nine month mark she wriggling will develop into a crawl, she will crawl on her hands and knees and even tackle stairs.

She continues trying to stand alone and will often fall back down on her bottom with a bump and the get back up again, but her persistence will be rewarded with being able to stand alone and unaided by about ten months.

It’s also at around ten months that she will enjoy walking with your help by holding onto your hand. From here you may see her first tentative steps alone and by twelve months she may be walking all by herself. She now has the ability to crawl very swiftly.

Social Development

Your baby is quite proficient with her vocal cords and will babble away melodiously, quite happy with herself. She will have mastered 'dada', 'mumum', 'baba' and other two syllable words that you use frequently. She will call you by shouting out, or making other sounds to get your attention. She may squeal or vocalise in excitement when toys or object move or make sounds.

She will practice her conversational skills by taking it in turn to speak with an adult and will now respond to questions and follow simple instructions. She will repeat sounds after you have made them and can now say one to two words.

She will ask for her toys by pointing at it to show you what she wants and she will be very proud to show you her body parts.

At this stage in her development you may notice her showing a shyness or fear of people she doesn’t know.

Important Note: Please understand that all children are individual and unique. They all develop in their own time and often at different rates. Please use this information as a guide only. If you are worried about our child’s development or their development seems vastly different to his/her peers, you should seek the advice of a health professional. The earlier any kind of issue is detected the sooner you can start helping your child. Please remember that the most important thing you can do is to support your child in a positive way.

Is your baby already signing hello and you want to teach them more?
