Childrens Literature - Fiction Genres Part 1

As a third grade teacher, I try to encourage students to read from a variety of genres in order to comply with the California Language Arts Standard of reading and responding to a variety of literature.  Although there are many different types of fiction genres out there, these are the main categories I address with my third graders at school.  Since it's a fairly long list, I had to split them up into 3 separate hubs.  This hub, Part 1, contains the first 4 genres.  Parts 2 and 3 contain the rest of the fiction genres, and the nonfiction genres are addressed in a separate hub.

A story that may contain a lot of action or that may include a quest for something
Example:  The Secret Shortcut by Mark Teague

A story that has characters who stand for ideas such as love, pride, greed, or tolerance
A story that usually has a message, moral, or lesson to be learned
Example:  Aesop's Fables compiled by Russel Ash & Bernard Higton

A story in which the hereos are usually royalty (like a prince or princess) and the villians are usually evil witches, sorcerers, or monsters
Example:  The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales by Brothers Grimm
