As a third grade teacher, I try to encourage students to read from a variety of genres in order to comply with the California Language Arts Standard of reading and responding to a variety of literature.  Although there are many different types of fiction genres out there, these are the main categories I address with my third graders at school.  Since it's a fairly long list, I had to split them up into 3 separate hubs.  Part 1 contained the first 4 genres, and this hub, Part 2, contains the next 4 genres.  Part 3 contains the rest of the fiction genres, and the nonfiction genres are addressed in a separate hub.

Historical Fiction

A story based on history with fictional main characters
Example:  Follow the Drinking Gourd by Jeanette Winter

Horror

A story about scary things
Example:  Goosebumps:  The Haunted School by R.L. Stine

Informational Fiction

A story with fictional characters and/or settings that tells the reader about real things
Example: Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body by Joanna Cole

Mystery

A story that has a problem created by an unknown element
A story with a main character who is searching for a solution or an explanation
Example:  Dracula Doesn't Drink Lemonade by Debbie Dadey & Marcia Thornton Jones
