As a third grade teacher, I try to encourage students to read from a variety of genres in order to comply with the California Language Arts Standard of reading and responding to a variety of literature.  Although there are many different types of fiction genres out there, these are the main categories I address with my third graders at school.  Since it's a fairly long list, I had to split them up into 3 separate hubs.  Parts 1 and 2 contained the first 8 genres, and this hub, Part 3, contains the remaining 5 genres.  The nonfiction genres are addressed in a separate hub.

Poetry

Verse written in order to create thoughts and feelings in the reader
The verse often uses rhyme and/or rhythm
Example:  Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein

Realistic Fiction

A story with imaginary characters and events that are so believable that they could take place in the real world
Example:  Lost by Paul Brett Johnson

Science Fiction

A story that uses elements of modern science
A story that is usually set in the future and/or involves other planets, aliens, etc.
Example:  Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace by Patricia C. Wrede

Sports Fiction

A story with fictional characters that is based upon a sport
Example:  Friday Nights by Maureen Holohan

Tall Tale

A story that is full of exaggerations
Example:  Paul Bunyan by Steven Kellogg

I was a high school lit teacher myself once upon a time. Good breakdown of fiction catagories (viewed 1,2, and 3). My students were quite political indeed and I had a very hard time catagorizing anything as Fable without a fight. In any case, I wonder what catagory the last two comments fit in. I assume by now you have edited your comment box such that comments must be approved. Hope mine makes it. (:
