Chiweiner Dogs
84
Yes, you heard me right, I said Chiweiner.
My mother works in the customer service department af a rather well known retail giant. She is constantly telling me stories of irate customers and off the wall occurrences from her store.
The other day she was telling me about a woman who wanted to return a PediPaws canine nail trimmer. She said when she tried to use it, it scared her chiweiner to death.
What?! Your what?! Yes, folks, that's right. She said her chiweiner. As you can imagine, my mom could not contain her laughter as she asked, "Your what?"
To which the woman replied, "My chiweiner. Its a mix between a chiuaua and a weiner dog."
This was all too funny. It got me thinking about a couple things. First of all, what does a chiweiner look like and secondly, why do we feel the need to humiliate animals the way we do?
Now, now, here me out...what I'm saying is--why do we feel the need to breed certain breeds of dog together just to call them by ridiculous names? Chiweiner? Come on. There are plenty more as well and they are all growing in popularity. While some are cute, others are really not. I will leave that judgement call up to you.
In researching the Chiweiner/chiweenie, I came across several other similarly named new breeds. Or, hybrid/ designer dogs as they are called:
The Dorkie
The Doxie-Poo
The Dameranian
The Affenhuahua
These are just a handful, and on mixedbreedpets.com, you can find an entire list ranging from Affenchon to Zuchons!

Why??
I am wondering, are the AKC guidelines going to be thrown out the window in a matter of years because we will have a whole new selection of homemade breeds? There are breeders to be found of these hybrids, selling pups and making profits. Setting their own standards for what a particular new "breed" should look and act like.
It all goes back to the beginnings of dog breeding I suppose, as that was how they did it before. Boxers, mastiffs, terriers, you name it all came from combining other breeds together for a specific look, temperment or ability. Of course, in doing such works, you are also running risks of doing more harm than good to the future breed.
Boston Terriers for example are stuck dealing with snorting, wheezing and snoring thanks to thier smushed in faces.
What I can't figure out is when did a dog of mixed breed go from being a 'mutt' to being sought after? Now, I have had many dogs in my lifetime, some purebred, some not. Neither is an better than the other. Although, I know many people who would disagree.
We have had great dogs who were mixed breeds and great dogs who were purebred. Each individual dog is different. I think many times when we do find that amazing dog, that one of a kind pet, we constantly compare every other dog to it. Maybe that's why we keep breeding different dogs together. To find the one dog we are always looking for.

The Risks of Chiweenie Breeding
Yes, Dauchsunds and Chihuauas each have good and bad qualities, as does every breed. Whether their particular qualities will work for you or against you depends on your personal situation.
Think of the negatives associated with both breeds. Yappy barking, aggresion, protectiveness, not suited for young children...I know not all qualities apply to both breeds or to each individual dog. They are simply a few examples.
As with all puppies, it would probably be a good idea to check that the breeder you acquire your puppy from is legit. A trip to the vet immediately upon purchasing the dog would be a good idea as well.
This article is not to encourage or deter anyone from buying a chiweiner, just a subject I found interesting and thought I would share. Happy reading!! :)

I agree shibashake. It is so sad the way some breeders, and I use the term lightly, treat it as a business. I still don't understand the paying miney for a dog somebody concocted on their own. Some are cute, sure, but it doesn't make sense.
We adopted a shelter rescued dog a year and a half ago. We had been dogless for three years after 14 years with a purebred Miniature Pinscher. She is obviously a mix (and spayed) but she looks a lot like our former MinPin, with --probably-- Chihuahua. (I wonder if she's a Minnehaha).
Minnehaha--I like it :D
they are good looking dogs before funnie named dogs... Everyone loves mine and he is famous around the apartments. Not because he is funny looking but cuz he is so dam cute!
Never said they were funny looking B--just said the name was funny. I'm sure he is cute and I'm sure everyone in your apartment gets a good chuckle when they find themselves telling friends about their neighbor's chiweiner.
Don't bust on my Mexican Hot Dog. "Spock" is the coolest dog in the world, can out-climb most dogs in our mountainous area (of course, he's in his little bag my wife carries on her shoulder), and he really is about the most lovable dog I've ever met next to our former neighbor's pit bull. We didn't get him because of the name, but because we knew he would be very small. Ben, our Lab, puts up with his antics, and I wouldn't trade him for the world.
God Bless.
certainly not busting on anybody, Guillermo. I never said anything negative about the breed. Just a commentary on funny dog names. The part about climbing the mts in your wifes handbag was too funny :) Thanks for the comment and chuckle...
Hi Janetta, very funny article. I have a rattie, which is a designer mixed breed (mutt) He is a cross between a fox terrier and a chihuahua. The reason we bought our rattie, was because he does not shed, is great with children, small, in fact he will always look like a puppy, and can kick anybody's butt when it comes to soccer. :-) My rattie looks alittle bit like the pups in picture 4 with the big ears, only he has a much fuller looking body. He is very interesting to look at, all the kids think he's cute and adorable, most adults ask, "What the hell is that?", but my rattie's temperament is the best. Thanks for sharing some other "designer breeds".
Thanks Whikat! Your rattie sounds cute!! My cousin has a rat terrier/boston terries mix. It is tiny but its ears are huge. If the wind blows just right he might take off in flight lol :D
LOL, Yep, it sound alot like my little guy. He does not like going out in deep snow or wind storm. He's so light I am pretty sure a good wind would carry him right off. His ears are like airplane wings. I can't give him up though, he is super sweet! he would let anybody take food from his dish and wouldn't even growl, He's a good dog. I was thinking about mixing him with a poodle so I could have a ratipoo? just kidding :-)
HAHA, or a ratoodle! Or a Pattie! hehe...maybe we should go into the designer dog business so we can think up all the funny names!! LOL
LMAO, "ratoodle! Or a Pattie!" I would love being in the designer dog business just to make up funny names! :-)
Never heard of these dogs until I acquired one from a friend a week and a half ago. She is cute and smart, 8weeks old and learns quickly. But I still think it's a stupid name. :)
they are cute! I've even heard them called Chiweenies LOL
See...said I was coming to check it out...Chiweiners...cute dogs....I love dogs...thanks! :) Two tiny paws up! :)
Hey thanks tom! Yes, you are a man of your word ;)

lol - those names you listed are hilarious. I love Zuchon; sounds like some new alien race :)
On a more serious note, I really wish there were more laws regulating the breeding and selling of dogs. Dogs shouldn't be made into a commodity that puppy mill operations use to make as much money as possible.
