Chocolate Diamond Rings

Let me share a story of an engagement that almost didn't happen. I have been close friends with Katherine and Adam for some time. I even introduced them to one another and acted as Adam's "wing woman" when he was courting Katherine. Their relationship is not necessarily smooth sailing, as they have always had the tendency to fight over the littlest of things, but somehow this worked for them and added spice to their relationship. They had been dating for two years and lived together for one year when Adam bought an engagement ring for Katherine - a beautiful chocolate diamond ring in the most yummy shade of rich chocolate brown.

It was a rather difficult item to find, as chocolate diamond rings had become popular as a jewelry item, but not necessarily for engagements. Many ladies would still go for the classic, white diamond engagement ring - or if there would be colors, then perhaps precious stones such as emeralds, sapphires or rubies would be added as an accent. But Adam wanted something truly different and unique for his bride to be, so he bought a chocolate diamond engagement ring in the shape of a starfish. And it truly was beautiful in its own way, composed of both white and chocolate diamonds in a platinum setting.

He set the mood by making reservations at Katherine's favorite restaurant, and he thought he'd be extra clever by putting the chocolate diamond ring inside their dessert - which was (you guessed it!) a decadent slice of chocolate cake. Dinner went on smoothly and when it came to dessert, Adam told Katherine to be careful while eating. Sure enough, she was and the ring got caught in the dessert fork. She gave him a big smile and said "You remembered! I never thought you could, but you remembered!" Adam was so puzzled as he knew it was not their anniversary; he marked that date in his calendar as he was left in the dog house the last time he forgot. He was trying to think of what the occasion may be.

Katherine saw his quizzical look, and said "I did not think you would remember the first time we went out on a date, but you did!" Adam gave a smile and went on to put the ring on her finger, but Katherine beat him to it. She thought the ring was a first date anniversary gift and not an engagement ring. Later on when I talked to them and things were cleared up, she admitted that she would have never thought of receiving a chocolate diamond engagement ring. After all, most women expect a classic white solitaire engagement ring when the big moment happens!

On their way home, Adam did not know how to tell her that the chocolate diamond ring was indeed their engagement ring. He kept thinking of a way to tell her but he could not get his brain to come up with a contingency plan. He did not sleep well that night.

In the morning, when Katherine woke up, she found a note beside her with her favorite chocolate bar on top. The note said "I would ask you to marry me but you already said yes and you're already wearing the ring." It went on to say "The ring may not be classic or expected, but it reminds me so much of you. The shape reminds me of love the ocean, and the color reminds me of the chocolate desserts we love to share, and I could not imagine sharing my life with anyone else but you!" Katherine was moved to tears, and when she went off to find him, Adam was there on one knee with a grin on his face.

That was three years ago, and we refer to it as the chocolate diamond ring story: a story of how chocolate gets even sweeter when you wear it on your finger, and the best part is, it won't melt in your hand!
