What the optician can see in the cornea

As a contact lens fitter corneas, are our main focus in the test room. When viewing through a slit lamp which is a high powered light beam with high magnification resolution we can see through the 5 transparent layers of the cornea.

Happily most people under 40 years of age have a clear transparent cornea. However lipid deposits associated with cholesterol build up can sometimes be seen in the cornea .The degree of milky deposit can vary from person to person .

It manifests itself usually as a fine arc shape at the lower limbal area of the cornea and is usually bilateral.

As the golden rule we would refer to the general practitioner for a cholesterol check.

Sometimes the cholesterol is naturally occurring and is not considered a risk .However it can be a sign of a build up in the arteries .When furring of the arteries does occur this can lead to a narrowing and a higher risk of heart attack.

You would probably think the type of person that is susceptible or higher risk is the 25 stone pork pie eating ,beer swilling lardy .But no!Most people I have seen are slim and go to the gym twice a week.

Surprised? It can come as a shock to the patient but there is no need to panic. If there is a build up and it is identified then , by  diet ,or medication cholesterol can be controlled and you can live a long and healthy life.

It is useful to have an eye test for many reasons especially if your family do have a history of heart disease.Regular 2 year checks at your local opticians is a visual and a health check .

If you haven't been for a while give them a ring today.

I welcome any eye questions from fellow hubbers .
