Although diet supplements are generally safe and effective, they should still be approached with caution. You should read the labels carefully, and even check with your doctor to see if you might experience any side effects.

An appetite suppressant (also known as a diet pill) differs from a diet supplement in that it is only available by prescription. The United States only has one approved (over the counter) diet pill "Alli weight loss pill"; Canada has banned all over the counter weight loss pills. Diet supplements, on the other hand, are readily available over the counter in both countries.

There are a wide variety of diet supplements available both online and offline, but it is best to avoid the "discount" type of products. Your doctor knows your health history and also knows which diet supplements are compatible with the medications you are taking. A gradual weight loss is always best; most doctors recommend 2 pounds a week or less.

Along with diet supplements, you should be on a complementary weight loss program. This program should incorporate both diet and exercise, as neither works well without the other. There are a number of reputable weight loss programs available that can be tailored to your needs; depending on your level of physical fitness and general health. These programs should usually be the first step, and then as your body begins to change, as you lose weight, you may require additional diet supplements. The purpose of the diet supplements is to replace some of the nutrients you may be lacking due to your reduced food intake. During this phase you should also be drinking at least 7-8 glasses of water daily; this not only helps to eliminate the toxins, but also helps your skin to retain its elasticity as the weight starts to come off.

While you are dieting you will probably require additional diet supplements, and then gradually taper off as you reach your desired goal. After this you would just maintain a healthy combination of diet and exercise and only require a minimum of supplements. They are not really meant to be taken long term as a substitute for a sensible diet. The best diet supplements are all natural or herbal; these will take a little longer to incorporate into your system, but are much better for your metabolism. Natural does not necessarily mean that they can do no harm, so again you should read the ingredients and consult with your family physician if you have any allergies or other health issues.
