The reality of product format is this: with so many different markets and so many types of products, the ideas you could come up with are limitless. As long as your product gives your customers value, you will find success.
With that said, here is how I would approach choosing a format for a new product within a specific niche. The Ideas I have shared here are meant to provide an example of how you could do it by breaking your product up into a series of packages targeted at a single niche. It isn’t necessarily the way you should create your product.
Start with simple eBook (low ticket front end product)
One popular product is an eBook. In this case you would likely write (or have someone else write) an eBook that ranges from 20,000 to 40,000 words and feature that as your main package.
To maximize the perceived value to your customers you may also want to include some bonus reports, introductory videos that fit with the book, or some other smaller bonus-item that makes the price of your book worth more to your customers.
An eBook is a cheap product to start out with. If you write it yourself, you aren’t out any money. But, in terms of working in your own niche, this is really just your introductory product to your customers. It introduces you, your brand, and the quality of your products.
If you take the time to create a good package, you can capitalize on the following steps.
As a last note – your front end product doesn’t have to be an eBook. Video tutorials, software, success blueprints, and more have all been featured as the “main” product in packages (and done quite well).
Up Sell 1 - Create more advanced video tutorials for up sell
After the initial product I might create more-advanced video tutorials to up sell to the eBook customers. I would create these before I ever marketed the eBook package. But, if it’s your first product, you also could choose to use the income stream from the eBook to finance creating the follow-up product.
With this product you take the information included in your initial package and go more in-depth.
To give an example, if it was a book on affiliate marketing, your front end package would give your customer everything they needed to get started. Then maybe you would follow it up with a complete advanced video tutorial on setting up affiliate sites that make huge sales.
Generally this up-sell package will cost as much or more than the initial package.
Up Sell 2 - Expert interviews
After your second up sell product, you could release a series of expert interviews. These would build upon what you taught in the advanced videos, but would also stand alone for clients who never made the second purchase.
The interviews would give real information from people who are well known in the market. What you would charge, in this case, would likely depend on the length of the videos, the quality of your experts, and on how much “real” information it adds to the products that your customers have already bought.
Up Sell 3- Continuity program/newsletter
Another idea that many use is adding in a program that constantly adds content to the package for a price. In some cases you may charge monthly membership fees, or possibly you just charge a one-off fee for a lifetime membership into your exclusive newsletter.
Mentor programs, insider reports, and/or membership sites are all ideas that fit into this step. What you charge (and for how long) would depend on the content and your market.
