Key Fluids For Your Vehicle

)Engine Oil :Nearly all engine oils today are multi-grade,this makes the oil more effective over a wider temperture range.Oil thickens when cold and thins when it gets hot. When cold multi-grade is very thin, that allows the oil to reach critical engine parts when first started. The most important part of the oil selection is viscosity. Most of todays Autos use 10W20 or15W30,but consult your owners manual for proper viscosity. Its important to check for the API standards. The other thing to consider is mineral or synthetic oil?Synthetics offer longer life lower temperatures and less consumption with less heat.

)Gear/Differential Fluid:Viscosity standards also apply to gear oils.A number higher than 60 indicates the fluid is designed to protect gear type components. The most common grades are 75W90 to 85W250. Viscosity of gearbox lubricants affect how quickly synchro rings engage. From a performance stand point thinner lube allows quicker synchro action.Vehicles equipped with limited slip require specific lubricants.

)Automatic Transmission Fluid:ATF as it is known is the most complex of all fluids. It serves as hydraulic fluid, clutch fluid and a gear and bearing lubricant. It is extremely important to use the recommended fluid in the owners manual.Transmission fluid should be changed ever 25,000 miles.

)Power Steering Fluid:In some vehicles specific fluid is required, like Hondas have their own brand. Most Dexron fluids serve as transmission and power steering fluid.

)Coolant:Radiator coolant is available in several types and colors.Again refer to the owners manual for vehicle type. The reason for using coolant is its anti-boil and anti-corrosion protection particularly in engines with alloy heads and blocks. You should flush your cooling system every 2 years.
