Choosing Your Career Path
Alright, this is going to sound a bit strange coming from somebody who hasn't even chosen their career path themselves yet, but I gotta tell ya, when my teachers back in high school told me to think about the future and what I want to do, I should have listened! So here are a few things to think about.
1. Make sure you choose what you want to do. The main thing is that you enjoy it. I always wanted to be a photographer. I have a step-father that tells me that if I were to study photography, I would get nowhere. I was silly enough to listen to him back then, but now I know that is one thing I really want to study and I know that if I can go far in that profession, I'll enjoy it immensely! So, that being said, don't listen to everyone else when they tell you that you won't make it or you'll never make a living from it, because if you want to, you will.
2. The best time to plan for your career path is while you are in high school. Here in Australia we have a different education system to America. We have Preschool, Primary School (Kindergarten to Year 6), High School (Year 7 to Year 10), College (Year 11 and 12) and finally University! I've only gone as far as having a High School education. I plan to study more but that's the thing, I'm still stuck on what to study! You need to at least have a bit of an idea of what you would like to do and then investigate what you should be studying to further yourself towards that career path. For example, if you want to be a police officer, you need to have excellent communication skills as well as English skills (depending on where you are in the world). Your main focus there would be English. If you wanted to be a Physical Education Teacher you would have to study Human Movement (Human Physics), Health etc. So think about that and mold your studies around it.
3. Read up on the career you feel you are most keen on. You may not know the full story about the career you are interested in and once you find out what it's all about, you may no longer be so keen, or you may decide you still want to work within that field, just not in the same section as you once thought you would. For example, between the ages of about 6 and 12, I wanted to be a Vet. This was mainly because I loved animals and wanted to look after them and care for them. As I got older, I realised that a Vets operate on animals and I do not have the stomach to do that! So, now I am looking at studying to be a Captive Animal Carer at a zoo near-by. I'll still be working with animals great and small, but at least I will be able to stomach it! Another example is my brother. He had always wanted to be a Mechanic up until last year. Then he changed his mind and decided he wants to be a Plumber instead. Personally, both sound pretty dirty to me, but, that being said, I would have stuck with being the Mechanic, but I guess money is money, right?
So get out there! There are so many career paths in the world of today that we probably have too many to choose from and that's more than likely part of the problem! But take advantage of this opportunity and go out there and follow your dreams, because if you work harder enough, they'll come true.
