Wedding cakes are sometimes one of the nicest things to look at during the wedding reception. But cakes can also be very expensive costing approximately $8 per slice. So if you need a cake to feed 100 people you can end up spending about $800 on your wedding cake. In my opinion spending $800 on a cake if just a little too much money; you won't necessarily spend this amount on your cake but through my research for my own wedding I found that the cheapest nice wedding cake I could find was $450. So what I have decided to do for my wedding is attempt to bake my own cake.

There are many websites you can visit for a walk through lesson on making your own wedding cake. I found a great walk through at http://www.yourwedding101.com/ this site also has a variety of other sections to browse while you are on their site.

You can also buy many books about making your own wedding cake from Amazon.com or your nearest Chapters bookstore. Now my advice about making your wedding cake is to do a test run prior to the wedding. You do want to leave your project until the last minute just to find out you just don't have the creativity, time, or even patience to make your own cake. If you go to any Michaels craft store you can find all of the things you need to make your wedding cake. They have the tiers, cake pans, fondant, and anything else you need. I also found this great walk-through on http://www.michaels.com/

Tint cake bows rose following package instructions

Place 1-layer cakes (3 inches high) on same size cake circles and prepare for rolled fondant

Cover cakes with fondant; roll with fondant smoother

Wrap ribbon around base of each cake; secure with tape. Attach flowers with dots of icing.

Once you have found the perfect recipe and look for your cake do a test run. This way if something doesn't go right it's ok. You can try as many times as you like. You can also use cake mix right out of the box to lessen the cost of your cake even more. When it comes time to make the official wedding cake, make sure to start atleast 2 days before the wedding to leave enough time for the preparation and fixing of any small mistakes.
