There are many areas that you should consider when choosing a Martial Art.

There are many different styles each very different from the next, some styles are more suites to different people. Each style has an emphasis on a different area.

Take some time to research, especially where kids are inviolved as you could be involved for many years to come. Make a bad decision and your kids interest will be very short lived.

Some styles are designed specifically for Self Defense while others are very Competition orientated and some are very traditional concentrating on the original or cultural aspects.

There is a definate overlap of skills between these although the other aspects can be very different.

Before you enroll in a class, go and watch a few sessions, see if you can join in for a class or two, speak to the Instructors and see if you get a good feeling about the whole set-up.

You must decide whether you want to be involved in an art that is directed towards Self Defense, Competition or tradition and let that be your first factor to consider.

By joining in with a class, you will get a good feel if the level of intensity is right for you too.

Take a good look at the contract that you are signing up for, whether it is month-to-month, quarter to quarter or even a year or more that you have to commit yourself too.
