Whether you use herbs for crafts, cooking, beauty products, or tea, there are many sources available from which to purchase them. You will want to assess your needs and decide which source can best meet those needs.

Grow Your Own

You may decide your best bet is to grow your own herbs, whether you do so in an outdoor garden or a kitchen container garden. If you are new to gardening, you will have to do some research. For instance, which herbs are appropriate for your soil type and climate? After the initial investment for seeds, soil, containers, tools, etc., growing your own herbs would be less expensive than buying them. You will also have peace of mind knowing exactly what, if anything, was sprayed on the plants or added to the soil. While it is an enriching experience, keep in mind that growing, harvesting, and drying your herbs will take time. If you would rather spend that time and creative energy on the end product, finding a supplier might be more appropriate for your situation. On the other hand, using herbs from your own garden can be an enjoyable part of the creative process and will add creative depth to the final product.

Local Nursery

You may wish to purchase your herbs from a local nursery. You will benefit from having experts available to answer any questions you may have. You will save money by not having to pay shipping charges. A nursery will most likely sell only fresh herbs, so drying them would still be your responsibility. Also, unless the herbs are organic, you will be buying those which have been sprayed with who-knows-what.

Farmers Market

Buying from a farmers market is another option. First of all, there is the positive "green factor" of supporting local farmers and growers. The products are often organic and of high quality; however, the selection may be limited. Also, unless they sell dried herbs in addition to fresh, the task of drying the herbs will be yours.

Health Food Store

Your local health food store can also be a good solution. They will most likely carry dried herbs. There is the added benefit of having a knowledgeable person at your disposal. You will want to inquire as to the source of their herbs. Is it a reliable source with a good reputation? How long the herbs have been sitting on the shelf is also important to know. Research prices before buying from a health food store. You may find the same product online for much less.

Online

In this day and age, the Internet is a great place to buy anything--even herbs. You can't deny the convenience of ordering exactly what you want from the comfort of your own home. Do not skimp on quality to save a buck, but at the same time, more expensive does not necessarily mean better. Research to find a reputable source who will provide a quality product.

You may be able to find everything you need from one source, or you may choose a combination of the above. Wherever you decide to purchase your herbs, it is worth the time and effort to do some research. Establishing a relationship with a reliable source will go a long way toward making your herbal creations an even more pleasant experience.
