Choosing the best aquarium is not difficult if you keep a few things in mind, including the size, the construction material and the shape that will suit your room the best. We will look at all these factors so that you can choose the best aquarium for your needs

The Size of Your New Aquarium

While most people imagine that it is right to begin with a small aquarium, this is not actually the best way since smaller aquariums are more difficult to care for and need more work to keep in a healthy condition. The reason for this is that the water in a smaller tank is more easily affected by changes, consequently if the temperature outside the tank drops or rises drastically, for example, there will be an almost immediate alteration in the temperature of the water inside your aquarium. A larger fish tank will be much more stable. An added consideration is that with a larger tank the fish wastes, will be dispersed over a much larger volume of water and so will be less likely to affect the fish. A 40 gallon tank is a good size to start with at a minimum.

Should You Choose Glass or Acrylic?

Now you need to decide between glass or acrylic an acrylic or glass fish tank. You also need to have the shape of the fish tank you like better in mind because several shapes, cylindrical for example, are only made from acrylic. Glass tanks are normally less expensive than acrylic aquariums but are much heavier. They have a tendency to spring leaks as they get older but this is easily dealt with. They aren't made in as many different shapes as the acrylic tanks. If you wish to buy an unusual shaped tank you will usually have to choose acrylic. Acrylic aquariums are costlier than all-glass aquariums but are lighter and, as they are manufactured from in 1 piece, do not usually leak. Care must be taken not to scratch the outside of the fish tank and you must not use any abrasive cleaners on the acrylic since this will scratch the exterior causing it look cloudy.

Aquarium Shapes

The conventional rectangular fish tank is clearly the best shape for a fish tank because of it's high water to surface area ratio that allows the greatest gas exchange. Nevertheless if you fancy a different shape then you will have to make certain you have good aeration so that your fish receive sufficient oxygen. Acrylic fish tanks can be purchased in many shapes which may include octagon, hexagon, round, cylindrical and made into coffee tables or wall mounted.

The Best Location for Your Aquarium?

When you are thinking about where to locate your fish tank make certain that you have plenty of space and that the weight can be accommodated. A 50 gallon tank filled with water will weigh as much as 550 lbs so you must be careful that the floor and any supporting furniture are strong enough. You can locate a wall aquarium on a dividing wall so that you can view the tank from both rooms and makes a fantastic addition to any room.
