So You Want A Hamster, but what type is best for you?

Hamsters are often treated as the obvious choice for parents as first pets for their children, but often the reality of the needs and care of the hamster are overlooked. If you want a pet that needs very little input from you, get a goldfish!

The beauty of hamsters, their friendly nature and playful antics, make them a popular choice for a lot of people. In recent years, different hamster breeds have become more and more widely available - so...which one is right for you?

Our Dwarf Russian Hamsters
Our Dwarf Russian Hamsters

Dwarf Hamsters

Dwarf Russian hamsters are very popular these days but don't be fooled by the size of dwarf hamsters. Unlike what you may assume, these cute little fuzzies actually need more room than the larger Syrian hamsters, so there is no cutting corners by getting a smaller hamster! In addition to this, and quite rightly, pet shops will often only sell dwarf hamsters in pairs. What they often fail to mention is that there is high potential for your furry little friends to become territorial and to fight. When taking on dwarf hamsters, always be prepared for this as a possibility.

In addition to dwarf hamsters needing the same, if not larger cages, dwarf hamsters also need to have at least one accessory of each kind, per hamster. For example if you have three together, each needs its own wheel, food bowl etc to reduce the potential for fighting.

Furthermore, although there may be an attraction to the smaller dwarf hamsters because they are smaller, in being so it is necessary to consider that they are also much quicker.

Even faster are the Chinese and Roborovski hamsters that are also becoming ever popular. Roborovskis are happiest kept in colonies of 4+. However, when taking them on you must be prepared for constant monitoring in case of fighting. If you want to house one of these smaller varieties, it is best to look at cages and accessories designed for mice if you want to keep them in a barred cage. This is because regular hamster cages will have larger gaps between the bars which aren't suitable for these hamsters. Ideally, Roborovski hamsters should be kept in a tank or plastic cage environment, making sure there is plenty of floor space and ventilation. The smallest tank size for housing any hamster should be 20 gallons in length (tanks are sold in gallon size generally speaking, but for those who work in litres, you're looking for 90+).

Syrian Bear Hamster, Sooty
Syrian Bear Hamster, Sooty

Syrian or Golden Hamsters

If buying a hamster for a child, the best option would be to get a Syrian hamster. Not only are they bigger, but much easier to tame. A fully grown Syrian hamster can reach about 18cm, with females often being slightly bigger than males when fully grown. A key note when housing a Syrian hamster is that they cannot under any circumstance be kept in pairs. They are naturally solitary animals and will fight to the death if housed with another. Syrians hamsters don't come without their own requirements. They need a good amount of floor space and despite common misconception, are often better to use accessories designed for rats, such as ‘jumbo' running wheels, as the smaller standard versions are responsible for a high volume of complications due to back problems onset by being forced to run with an arched back. Hamsters run for miles each day, so the wheel size is very important.

Sooty The Syrian Hamster Who Looks Like A Bear

Responsibilities Of Owning A Hamster

Each type of hamster has its own needs and quirks, and taking on a hamster isn't a light responsibility. If intending to buy for a child, consider also that the average lifespan is between 2-3 years, and thus you must also be prepared for the loss of the hamster.

Whilst considering whether homing a hamster is right for you, make sure that you have enough space to adequately house them. The minimum requirements for a Syrian hamster cage should be around 60cm x 40cm x 40cm. Ideally dwarves should be housed in something the same size or larger. To add to this, all hamsters need somewhere that is quiet during the day time. Being nocturnal animals, they require this time to get their much needed sleep.

Your cage must also be kept out of direct sunlight to reduce the risk of dehydration. Saying that, drastic temperature changes are also a problem. Any draft is likely to cause your hamster illness and thus they need to be housed in a spot with a fairly constant temperature. If you have other pets in the house, you need to make sure that the cage is not within their reach and preferably in a room that they don't have access to.

Bring Home Your Cute New Friends

So...you've decided which hamster is right for you?

When going to collect your hamster(s), it's very important to remember that they will be extremely susceptible to stress. Pet stores typically provide you with a small cardboard carry case to bring your hamsters home in. It is, however, better if you take along a larger plastic carrier (these are widely available, and often used as plastic fish tanks or for keeping bugs) with some bedding and food to make their journey more comfortable. As well as making the ride more comfortable for them, they also won't be able to escape - very important if you're driving. This case can then also be used if your little ones need to take a trip to the vets. Remember if there is no one to hold the container, strap it in with a seatbelt.

Make sure you have the cage ready and set up before you bring your hamsters home. The stress that they experience in unfamiliar surroundings can leave them wide open to serious illness so it is important to reduce this stress in any way possible.

I hope this is helped to make sure you get the hamster type that suits you best. Have lots of fun together!

Good luck I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Most dogs soon get over their initial curiosity and jealousy and as long as they are made to feel important too they tolerate the furry little friends fairly well. although, obviously should always be supervised around hamsters, especially if kept in open topped plastic bin cages like we keep our dwarf hamsters in.

Hey, on problem.

A male hamster does not need a girlfrien, this would lead to further unnecessary breeding and more hamsters to try to find homes for.

If you want a companion for dwarf hamsters same sex siblings work best, or at least same age, same sexed siblings can work. But fighting can still occur and it doesn't always work out.

Syrians obviously must be kept alone.

I would recommend that you remove your email address from the comment or you will get spammed++

AnimalLoversWeb profile image

Hi Lauren, the article above should give you some idea of the differences between dwarf and Syrian hamsters and there is more info on our forum to help you compare them.

But if you already have a dwarf why don't you consider a Syrian, they tame better and are easier to handle, being bigger and not as fast moving as dwarfs. Also once tamed a Syrian stays tamed whereas dwarfs require constant handling to stay tame.

Lauren  says:

sorry to ask another question but do you have any hamster name suggetions??

AnimalLoversWeb profile image

AnimalLoversWeb  says:

To come up with a name that suits you really need to have met an animal, seen its appearance and see what kind of personality it has. There seems a bit of a trend lately to name pets with ordinary boy or girl names rather than typically "pet" names so just look up a baby naming book for some ideas.

Personally I like Leela for a girl and Bender for a boy as I like those characters in Futurama ;)

As you know my hamsters had babies, I now have the dad and son together and the son is very little and the wheel in their cage is good for him, but the dad is arching his back in the wheel, Should I get another wheel and keep the smaller one in the cage or, just let the little one go into the bigger wheel?

thank you, jacinda

AnimalLoversWeb profile image

AnimalLoversWeb  says:

If the dad is arching his back the wheel is too small for him, so a bigger wheel would be better, if you keep more than one hamster in a cage then having more than one wheel is better. Mostly though you can't keep the father and son together as at about 4-6 weeks the father will fight and seriously injure or kill the son.

Keeping more than one male (dwarf) hamster together is usually only possible with brothers or at least very young hamsters introduce at under 6 weeks.

AnimalLoversWeb profile image

Hi Hsu Yeuh, robos are lovely hamsters but they do take a lot to time and patience to tame.

You should look on our forum from link just below here where there is lots of advice about taming hamsters.

It basically comes down to a patient gradual approach spending a lot of time carefully encouraging them to come to you with treats, talking to them gently, sit in play pen with them and let them dictate the pace of when they come to you rather than grabbing them.

Good luck.

What type of hamster? How old. How long have you had the hamster. How long has the shaking been going on. Is the hamsters otherwise ok e.g. eating, drinking, weeing and pooing ok?

Why don't you stop by the forum and tell us more about your hamster and we'll try to help.

Thanks for the further info, it is quite a complex problem I'm afraid and difficult to say for sure, but unusual that it is in a hamster that you have had for some time, as they sometimes tremble a bit when new and anxious. Assuming that is is not cold and she is not simply shivering I would recommend seeing a vet with this as it may be some unusual neurological condition.

Also some pics and even video would be helpful and as I said the forum is a better place to deal with complex questions, more space to reply and more people to give some advice.

Good luck with it.

Can my two Chinese Dwarf Hamsters have fleas?

AnimalLoversWeb profile image

AnimalLoversWeb  says:

Yes, they can. It is relatively unusual for hamsters though who are kept indoors and who shouldn't be coming into contact with any other animals that have fleas.

Getting fleas would suggest that they are coming into contact somehow with either wild rodents e.g. house mice or that if you have other pets in the house they may have fleas, especially dogs or cats.

So you need to have a good look at any of your other pets that you have and treat them for fleas. In the hamsters you can get flea powder for hamsters, usually to put in the bedding but can be applied carefully direct to the hamster.

Hi,

I've Had loads Of Pet Hamsters, Bought from The Pet Shop. My Friend Bought Me One For Xmas, Billie, He Was A Star, My Best Friends, So Tame And Friendly. Then One Day I Thought It Would Be Terrible if he died....I Opened The Cage, He Didn't Come Up As Usal. i Got Worried. I Poked Him. I Carefully Picked Him Up, I Screamed, He Was Dead...Well That's What I Thought Then He Opened His Mouth gasping For Breath We Brought Him down Stairs, Put Him Under A Light To keep Him Warm My Dad (I Am 12) Stayed Up All Night Trying To Revive Him...He Sadly Died. I Was So Sad. i Had Just Bought And \amazing RotaStak Cage For Him...

So I Decided To try Somthing Different, Dwarf. We Went To Pets At Home, The Lady Said Chinese Were The Best So i Said ok. She Said You could Only keep The Males Together. the Other Lady Came with all The hamster in The Cage, All female. I Chose 2. I Was So Happy! Bringing them home with me I Put Them In A New Amazing Massive Cage, Did everything Right Then They Died A Week After... So Sad again.

My Brother Bought A Syrian Hamster from pets at home, put it in the same amazing plastic cage. We Wash the Old Bits and there werer new bits. she died 3 days ago!

WHY?!?!?!

I'm Wondering if It Is Wise To get More Hamsres. WHY ARE THEY DYING?!?!

My Heart is So Blue.

please, can you tell me what i'm doing wrong...?

Is It The Cage? Is There Enough Air venatalation??

Its Rotastak.

help please

Hi Roey, sorry about the delay in replying, been busy.

I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of your hamsters.

It sounds almost certain that the hamsters from the pet shop have had Wet Tail and if this is the case the cage needs to be sterilised and ideally not used again for approx 6 weeks.

Rotastaks are nice but not very easy to clean well as they have lots of little nooks and crannies, I would suggest cleaning it thoroughly with a strong disinfectant cleaner and leaving it dry for 6 weeks before getting any more hamsters.

You should also think about rescue hamsters or breeders as a source of healthier hamsters as pet shops are not known for their great standards of animal welfare.

Good luck.

Please look in on our forum where you will get replies to any further queries much quicker.

AnimalLoversWeb profile image

You should certainly take great care when the hamster is out of its cage, when cage cleaning or palying in a playpen or being handled as clearly a cats natural instinct would be to kill the hamster. If you use bin cages you should use a lid.

Amazingly some people have introduced their hamsters to cats carefully and they have accepted them, but this takes supervision and care and need to be done gradually.

Good luck with it.

My hamster just died, but I am wondering did she have a heart attack? One day I got home from school and she was just sitting in the corner of the cage, shaking. She didn't have liquid fences, wasn't wet around the tail, and didn't have any loss of fur. The weird thing was she wouldn't open her eyes. She would move if a poked her, walking blindly around the cage occasionaly crashing into things. I held her and she just started convulsing. I was just holding her like I allways do palm open. Then she stopped but her her condition seemed to go down hill. She would move barley at all and I had to feed and give her water by hand. Less than a week lader I helder her again, and once more she began convulsing. Then she seemed to fall over (still convulsing) as if she was to weak to stand. Then she went limp. For a few moment she just lay there than she died. She didn't breathe move or anything although I waited for more than an hour so I would know for sure. Please reply, I just want to know...

Hi Lauren, sorry to hear about your hamster.

Hamsters only live about 2 years, what age was she?

From what you describe a stroke sounds more likely than a heart attack. There are also some other neurological conditions they can get which can make them lose co-ordination or to have siezures. But strokes are pretty common in ageing dwarf hamsters.

I am afraid that it is impossible to say for sure what has been the caue of death.

Lauren: I'm really sorry to hear that, it is very young for it to have died.

I'm sure you will have many happy memories of her and at least she is not suffering now.

Mary: Not everyone would agree, but in general a Syrian hamster is a good choice for a first hamster, they are incredibly cute, move slower than dwarfs and are a bit larger so are easier to handle, they hand tame very well and I therefore I would recommend a Syrian.

Yohanny, I'm afraid it does sound like your hamster is approaching the end of her life. Just keep her in a nice quiet, warm comfortable environment for her last few days.

Amanda & Taylor, hamsters are nocturnal so they are usually asleep most of the day anyway and most active in the evening and through the night. So they are actually a good pet for people who are out most of the day.

Syrian hamsters usually cost about 10-20 dollars and the inital set up - cage and accessories etc probably about another 70-150 (depending on size of cage - bigger is better) dollars and monthly thereafter for bedding and food around 10 dollars/month.

Thomas, that is an unusual age to be biting, usually they are well tamed by then. It sounds like your hamster is possibly unwell in some way and I would recommend seeing a vet with her.

EVERYONE: We have an animal forum where we and other members are available much quicker to answer specific questions. This page is really more suitable for comments rather than questions - so please if you have a question go to our forum and ask there.

I love your web page! It is making me want to get another hamster even more! I used to have a syrian hamster named Hamtaro, but he died a year ago of old age. :( He was 3, almost 4. If anyone else reads this comment and wants to get a hamster, I would recomended that you get a syrian. They are larger so they won't run away and they are said to be more friendly. If you have heard anything on you should get one from a smaller pet store, don't. My sister got a bunny from a small pet shop and it died within a few months from a disease in his brain. It all depends on the pet store, but I would suggest you go to a big, nice pet store like Petsmart. sorry i didnt mean to send the last post.

So, I am 14 years old and Love pets, and I recently had to put my guinea pig to sleep. I just cant bear living without a pet, so I decided to try a hamster. Personitly I think that the syrian hamsterrs arre not that cute, i would prefer to get another kind. What kind do you recommend? I am very good and responsable with pets because i have had 3 rabbits, 3 dogs, and 2 guinea pigs, just no hamsters. I was also wondering if they make a lot of noise at night because i would want to keep her in my room. I want a kind that is friendly and doesn't bite. Please reply asap! Thanks!

I have had so much fun since I started keeping dwarf hamsters, and especially chinese dwarfs. Even though they are not a true dwarf, these tiny creatures provide hours of fun for me and my kids. I recommend them. Thanks for a great page!

Hi

Im thinking about getting a hamster (when my mum will say yes), but i am very active. do you have to be with them for a long time elvery day or just for an hour or 30 mins.

Also could you put it by the tv or opposite the tv or would that make them ill? Is it hygienic to put them into your bedroom?

I will probally get a Syrian hamster.

Please can you respond back as soon as possible.

I am 7 and I got a Russian Dwarf Hamster for my birthday. My Mom almost didn't get it because everyone says get a bigger hamster. The Russian is not as small or as fast as the Robo, so we tried the Russian. She is so sweet and friendly, I just put my hand in the cage and she runs and climbs in. I think it's important to hold the hamster in the pet store first to see if it's going to be friendly. Also get a young one, older ones are less friendly. Mine was 3 months old. Everyone loves her and says they can't believe how friendly she is. I hold her everyday, clean her cage every week. Feed her every couple days. It's very important to be responsible with them. I am very happy with the Russian Dwarf, so I hope this helps someone who wants to buy a Dwarf.
