Choose a dog to suit your lifestyle
Before taking any dog home, think and choose it carefully. Find out everything about that particular breed of dog. Do not be swayed by that tiny bundle of fluff wagging his tail excitedly at you. They do not stay small and cuddly for long. They all grow, some much more than others, which is why it is so important to know what you want in a dog.
Some dogs need a lot more care than other ones, because their hair becomes matted and their coats need constant brushing. Whereas others will need, their fur clipped on a regular basis, especially around their eyes. If not clipped their eyes, may become infected.
Are you looking for a large dog to protect you? If so, remember that a large dog may be protective, but it can knock you flying and break your bones unintentionally in the process. My Blue Heeler knocked me flat on my face chasing after a ball, although I was lucky, no broken bones.
They need exercising regularly. This is doubly important if you are getting on in years, and then a large dog will cost a lot more to feed as they grow in size.
If you are thinking of having a baby in the future, then remember, all dogs can become jealous and can resent a new baby in the house. These things need considering before bringing any dog into your home.
On the other hand, you may want a small cuddly one. Jack Russell's make a great pet, but they are very, very active and boisterous. They enjoy a lot of interaction with the family, and need regular exercise. It is also easy to trip over small dogs as they are often under your feet and you do not see them.
Shih Tzu dogs are a good example of dogs needing a lot of care with their coats. They need a regular brush and having their fur clipped more often in the summer months. They have a beautiful temperament, although they tend to chase after the birds in my back yard. I constantly keep an eye on them in that respect.
When you bring your puppy home, keep him away from any other dogs until he has had all his vaccinations. Your vet will advise you to keep your puppy home until he is about 12- 15 weeks old.
Training is not as important as avoiding your pup from exposure to, or catching distemper or parvovirus, which can be fatal. This can be expensive too.
So consider these things, before bringing home that beautiful cuddly pup this year. The extra expenses of vet fees, vaccinations, trimming of dogs nails all add up and need to be considered before obtaining a dog.
If everyone thought before buying a dog, there would not be so many homeless dogs left wandering the streets or in dog homes.

Thanks for sharing that Mr Marmalade, He still loves you though. Unlike humans dogs love unconditionally.
I really appreciated this Hub. A lifelong dog owner, I know only too well the importance of knowing the breed's requirements and "doing it right" from the beginning - After all, you don't have a second chance to make a first impression with a dog! The family must be committed and consistent, too, and give the dog the leadership it needs from the beginning. Certainly, that adorable pup has needs beyond being cuddled and looking cute around the house - yet so many people fail to consider its full requirements. I'm so glad you call attention to some of these critical things! Working breeds, especially, must have a "job" and burn off all that excess energy with 2 focused walks or runs daily. If you can't meet the dog's needs, don't get it. And you are so right - It's important to become an empowered, knowledgeable pet owner when it comes to your dog's health, too, and there's much more on that and dog vaccines at squidoo.com/dog-health-care/ . We dog lovers must band together to educate the general public and, in the process, save more dogs from abandonment in shelters. I look forward to more of your great dog articles!
Very good article. Another consideration before making the decision to get a dog is to adopt from a shelter or Human Society. Do not buy from a pet store as it perpetuates keeping the puppy mills in business . Also be wary of the dog breeder that you are going to buy from on line as many are the same puppy mills that are supplying the pet stores.
Thanks for stopping by caregiver and June, Very true comments thanks again
My mom and I got a puppy once. It was a disaster. We got him from a private owner who lied. The pup had a lot of health issues. luckily for us I was allergic. It cost my granmother a lot and my dad which it ended up going to. Big hassle. I have a pet pillow. I make them. It is the perfect pet. Does not pee or poop. Just lays around all day!
Now that is a great alternative idea, and it doesnt argue with you either. I still love the real thing. My son in law has an allergy to cats, yet he has a Jack russel with no problems. Also the Shuzitu's fur isnt like normal dogs fur.
although they take a lot of looking after. Thanks for reading and commenting.

I love dogs. I took our brand new Doberman pup for dog training many years ago and seriously the only person who learnt dog training was Frank.
Mind you he was a good watchdog. I had just come home from 8 weeks in hospital and was in bed and they sent someone from the office to get my signature. I am asleep Rex was parked on the landing between floors, when the guy arrived and Rex puts his paw out and shakes hands.
Anyway good hub.
Thank you
