Choosing A Topic for your HubPage
52This Hub Page is a short tutorial to help you pick up the right topic for your Hub Page. It basically elaborates on Step 4 in my original "Home Business Recipe using Hub Pages".
So, what shall you write your revenue generating hub page about? Well, I'm not about to give you a list of topics, but I do wish to highlight some considerations here. By the way, these hold true for any content website production, be it here on hubpages , a blog or your website hosted just about anywhere. As long as you aim at writing for a profit, you should really consider the following.
Choose a Profitable Topic
If you go back to my tutorial, you'll see that the basic revenue model is Adsense based. That means that you'll be making money when people click on the little text ads that Hub Pages puts up on your pages. This is probably the most common business model for information website publishing, be them on Hub Pages or on self-owned domain names.
A key concept here is that not all Adsense ads pay the same when clicked. Why is that? Well, when advertisers come to Google and ask to place their ads on the Adsense network, they are asked to bid on their keywords, and say just how much they'd be willing to pay to have their ads show up before the other ads on the same page. So, when your advertisers are selling a product or service that is very expensive, they are more likely to pay more to get potential customers to their site. The more each customer is worth to them, potentially even, the higher they will be paying you per click.
For example, if a certain advertiser sells bird food and makes $1 a sale, it won't make sense for them to give any publisher more than a few cents per click. If they're an insurance company making $10,000 from a single customer, then they may be willing to give you more than $20 per click (remember, not all of those clicks would convert into sales!).
So, yes, writing a web page about insurance is likely to draw in higher-paying ads than a page about birds. How can you find out which topics have the highest paying keywords? There are sites out there that will give you lists, which may or may not be up to date. There are database services too, such as Keyword Elite, providing you with literally millions of keywords and the amount of pay per click you can expect for related ads.
Now, obviously none of these is 100% accurate, but if you're looking into web publishing on a large scale, they may prove to be a worthwhile investment. Above all, use your common sense, and think about just how profitable your chosen topic may be for someone.
Popularity and Competition
A crucial consideration in choosing your topic is how many people out there actually want to read about it. You may think that the question of which kind of glue is best used in hot air balloons is fascinating, but how many share your opinion? True enough, this is where the famous internet "long tail" phenomenon comes into play. There may be only 5 people in your entire town who are interested in hot air balloons, but with the internet, your page could reach out to millions, even billions of potential surfers. With only 5 people in each town, you could be writing a page with an appeal to several tens of thousands worldwide!
That said, reaching all of the hot air balloon glue fans may not be easy and could take quite some time. If you go for something more popular, such as the latest in hot Hollywood gossip, and you are probably aiming at a larger audience there than fans of hot air balloons. Should you be able to tap into a good source of traffic, such as a high listing in the search engines, you could be looking at quite a lot of surfers visiting your page.
How can you tell if your topic is popular? There are some services and sites that can help you there. They usually use a limited database of searches, accessible to them by one of the search engines and as such they are not entirely accurate. They can still provide you with a good enough indication though, as to which terms are more popular than others. One of the most widely used tools is offered by Overture/Yahoo and is free of charge. Now, the other side of popularity is competition. Other web publishers out there are also on the lookout for lucrative topics that have a larger following, and hopefully a high income along with it. These writers are likely to focus on the same popular topics and niches. The more competition you have, the harder it is to grab the eyes of the surfers, or of the search engines.
It is indeed a fine balance between popularity and competition, when it comes to choosing your topic. My tip to you would be this, try aiming at a new and fresh angle of a popular topic, and narrow down the scope of your article. Instead of targeting something as large as "Hollywood Gossip", maybe opt for "The Top Vacation Destinations of the Stars", or "The Top Ten Most Popular Sports Cars in Hollywood".
Should You Write About Something You Know and Love?
I have often heard it said that you should make web pages about things you enjoy and know about. Now, I have to say, that I don't entirely agree with that. If you are making websites just for fun, then sure, go ahead and focus on something you enjoy. It will show in your web page. However, if you are doing this strictly for revenue, then I would have to say that other considerations (see above) come first.
As for being knowledgeable, well, this is a finer point. You could probably research and learn about almost anything, at least to the extent of writing a decent web page about it. However, if you are already familiar with the topic, you could save on research time and just go ahead and write your article. The time you would have used to research, would then be used to promote your site, or even produce your next page! So, you see, actually knowing enough about your topic to teach others, is indeed a huge plus.
The best thing would be to know quite a lot about a topic that you actually care about, and for that topic to be popular, without too much competition and with high-paying keywords. If you have that, hurry up and get your web page up!
