Hubs to be read and What Not to Do

Writing a Hub on Hubpages that people want to read is the entire point of writing a Hub. It is the entire point of writing anything public. Obviously this does not apply to your diary or journals (although some people even put those out there for the world).

We write publicly to be READ. Ergo - this Hub. This will be Obvious to those of you who have been here awhile; not so clear to new people and not even clear to me much of the time! LOL Seriously though - just because *I* think something is interesting doesn't mean anyone else will! Although with an audience as massive as the Internet there are Always bound to be *somebody* else!

Okay - so here goes; how do I know when I have chosen a topic to write a Hub on that it will be well-received (or...received at all) - I've done some checking and here's what I have discovered thus far; I am SURE that whom ever reads this and has been at Hubpages for some time can add a lot of quality to this little hub. So, If this is Y-O-U then, Please, for those less fortunate - Share!!

#1 - I have to date written 102 Hubs I think with several that I have not yet published (they just sit there in read, waiting for me to finish them - beckoning me each time I view my list of Hubs. Here is what I see. I see a long list, in this list there are arrows that are blue and read - as well as sometimes the broken links icon or (shudder) the *needs revision or you'll be flagged (or is that Flogged?) haha - so far I have written 5 entire paragraphs and said what? NOTHING!! Get it - #1 is THIS. Writing and saying absolutely NOTHING. Who wants to read that? NOONE.

#2 - Looking over my hub list I can clearly see a pattern of what people have liked (red arrow up) and continue to read over time (by keeping Track of my arrows)

Make a simple chart - Jot down the date-decide how often you want to check-then see if your arrows change, how often do they change, do they become blue arrows (pointing down), has a link in your Hub suddenly become broken on the site you had pointed to...? Well...FIX IT! Don't leave any crappy link broken, boring, mis-spelled, non-read hubs around just sucking up band-width, ok?

#3 - If you have written a lot of hubs on a lot of different topics this can be a Very good thing so long as you know what you are writing about! Know Your Subject Matter. There is not a whole lot worse than a poorly written Hub, but a poorly written Hub that is BORING, MIS-SPELLED --AND--the author has NO CLUE what they are writing about is just screaming off the page ((*PLEASE DELETE ME - LET ME GOOOOO....*)) You can hummmm the tune.

#4 What I have discovered myself is that the Hubs I wrote on a specific topic were Not at All the ones I would ever have guessed would be the most popular! I just find/found that to be really weird for me. Not that I did not know my subject matter, as I do. I just realized (was reminded) that every one has some many different interests that my niche, the Hubs I write the Most about are NOT the ones that are the best liked by the public. This is an important concept to keep in mind and not forget it for a moment like I did.

#5 Don't use a bunch of extra words as filler. I am guilty of this on certain Hubs (like this one) but not on the technical ones. Keeping that in mind is important. Who is going to give a thumbs up or Digg a Hub that is filled with FILLER? Not only are they unpleasant to read (if they get read at all) - they certainly won't be remembered -- ending up as more cyber-crap sucking up yet more band-width in the gigantic black hole of crapholes. <---LIKE THAT.

#6 Once I discover the pattern from my chart, I begin from there and do some research. I search hubpages for the topic as well as keywords related to said topic. Then read the Hubs written by the people who really know what they are writing about and learn from them. The day I stop learning and think I can do it Better than the best - I'd better quit! (As should you).

So...I write what I like to write about - I know my subject matter and I know it is a topic the mass majority of people are interested in...this generally involves answering questions and/or giving new light/ideas on that subject.

To me - Hubbing is about the Sharing of Information.

Be Honest. Ergo - Don't Lie. Don't even lie out of Ignorance (probably the most common form of lie). Don't lie by omission. Keep it neat, clear, concise and to the point.

That's what I have to say about Hubbing for the masses. Please ADD to this in the comments field and PLEASE add links to your really great hubs so you can show the lowly-ER (lol) of us how to *geter' done!

If you got this far - WOW - and thanks!

Hi Melanie,

Sorry but I LOVE this hub and can't imagine why it was originally rated so low. Of course, I've only been around for 3 weeks, so what do I know. LOL

I can say that it seems like all my hubs start at 49 and have to crawl their way up. I figure it is my subject matter, but what do I know being a newbie.

Thanks for an entertaining, yet educational hub. In no time I'm sure it will hit the high numbers.

Thanks for your comments on my HUb - a lot fo 'hubscore' seems to be down to luck! I managed to get a couple of hubs that became popular due to picking a niche market - these two hubs then pushed up my average for all my other hubs!

Take for example this hub - it's no worse than any of my hubs, and is better than the majority of my hubs - but it scores 69 - doesn't toally make sense to me!!!!

hmmm...I am quite confused it seems, your hub mentions not misspelling words and yet in your title choosing is misspelled, was that a purposeful event to appear more human or to point out that it would detract from your score? I really don't see misspellings detracting from readership, but perhaps it does affect the hub score. I even had my worst article here chosen for hubnugget wannabe's with every term in the title misspelled (for Google rankings) I was really wishing I had posted a different article for that one...LOL

Anyway, I like this hub, and the advice about tracking your red arrows is sound, the closer attention you pay to that, the more readers you are going to attract, whether from Hubpages or from search engine traffic.

I enjoyed your hub. I am also surprised at which of my hubs have been the most popular. I figured it is because they have the word "beauty" and also they have pictures of pretty women. How shallow we are!
